recent releases, but IMHO it is a remnant from a release update: I had
it on two systems which I upgraded from 12.10 to 13.04

With the latest update, 3.8.0-30.44, the back light stop working again.
In the change log I saw that the fix which was added in 3.8.0-20.31 is removed.
The latest kernel makes the XPS 13 unusable.
