Further information:
In my case, the situation happened when updating Kubuntu (16.4 to 16.10) from
command line using, and after do-release-upgrade crashed during update.
Google adviced me to try apt-get -f install - then the error described above
happened.
After retrying "apt-get -f install",
Also fixed on the Dell laptop. Seems to be a problem with the `squeezelite`
package.

Try to disable the squeezelite service, with:
sudo systemctl stop squeezelite.service
sudo systemctl disable squeezelite.service
This will prevent it from loading on reboot. For me, this fixes the problem.

I'm installing fresh Ubuntu 16.04, I will be trying the latest kernel
4.9 rc-6 to see if this is fixed.

Please update the bug description to clarify if the machine with the
faulty HDMI port is the one with a capped resolution.
I experienced a similar issue recently. In my case it was a poor
connection on the HDMI plug limiting the available resolutions. The fix
for me was to plug in a fresh HDMI

I saw an app report dialog pointing to the failure that I believe is
referenced in bug 1631210. Then when trying to launch from the command
line I see:

fqterm no longer uses Qt4 now. Please examine the problem again against

I haven't verified this yet, but it looks from the XOrg log like these
systems are booting into dual head (with the SVideo out on head 2),
2128x800 total. That width over 2048 is probably what's causing the
problem. I did "lose the mouse" on one, and suspected a "phantom head."
I went to System
With the removal of iptraf from Debian unstable it's also been dropped
from Zesty. Closing all iptraf bugs in Ubuntu as wontfix.
