The problem is caused by your backend not having a standard name for the
"document source" option. The standard name is "source". Yours uses
"doc-source". Therefore, because gscan2pdf doesn't recognise you are
using an ADF, it assumes you are using a flatbed, and only allows you to
scan 1 page.

Update on behavior: the last few times the internal display went black,
I did not touch the keyboard and mouse at all, and the display came back
after a few seconds. (Tested with the laptop in the port replicator and
an external display connected via the DP port.)

Thank you for taking the time to report this crash and helping to make
this software better. This particular crash has already been reported
and is a duplicate of bug #1445316, so is being marked as such.
Confirmed on rpi2 image. Removing open-iscsi package fixes the 'problem'
for me.

systemd-modules-load.service: Failing due to missing
On zesty the issue is still present.
A minority of the engines have transitioned to proper multiarch support
(e.g., oxygen-gtk). Most of them seem to still have conflicting amd64
and i386 packages (e.g., aurora). Some have the .so file implemented the
engine in legacy places (nodoka).

If I download .deb file e.g. chrome or skype, it will open in gnome-
software, but pressing the install button does nothing.
This is on ubuntu 16.04 (installed today from a 16.04.2 image, and fully
updated).
This is maybe a re-occurrence of Bug #1672424 or Bug #1573408
