I get a lot of video corruption on my 2k display. It usually shows up as
bands of the background image or gnome-shell status bar flickering
across the display at different vertical positions. Everything works

Okay, the issue with failing X server in my case was not relevant to the
encryption errors and was resolved by completing the upgrade process properly:
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
So this one was more related to the broken upgrade process for 17.04-17.10, so
please disregard

Please remove libqtgconf from Ubuntu. It has no reverse-depends in 14.04
LTS and later. It depends on the deprecated and unmaintained 'gconf'
library which we're trying to remove from Debian and Ubuntu soon.
According to its MIR bug LP: #708661, it was used for Unity 2D.

Deleting the line does fix the akonadi startup problem, but not the cause.
