I tried xenial-proposed, but the fix doesn't seem to be available yet.
It's still pulling 4.15.0 from xenial-updates (and that one still has
the problem).
I double checked that xenial-proposed is properly configured by installing
'linux-generic':

I have the exact same problem. Perform a diff between my error message
and the original from the author of this bug report and you will find no
difference.
