Hi Brian,
thanks for the update. I used Software Boutique to add 'proposed'
source. Running "sudo apt-get install shotwell" pulled the new version,
along with shotwell-common.
Shotwell now correctly logs into flikr and is able to upload photos and
videos.

This issue occurs after a kernel update from 4.15.0 to 5.3.0.51 and keeps up to

You are right. It looks like a problem with the ActivKey device.
I don't see what change could have created this regression.
First, do not use virtual machine. They often make the things more complex to
debug.
Second, try to re-install a previous version of Ubuntu to check it was working
fine.

Thanks. Yes if the nouveau kernel driver is crashing then it's quite
possible the gnome-shell process will be frozen. Still, it would be
interesting to know where in gnome-shell this happens. And to confirm
they're the same issue or two coincidental ones.

Trying as-is on armhf:
After install I see the reported fail:
$ systemctl status chrony

If we're unable to solve this quickly then consider opening the
'Additional Drivers' app and installing the proprietary Nvidia driver...

I've switched back to the 5.4 kernel and have enabled the 'nomodeset'
parameter. The laptop has booted fine. I'll keep using it like this
and let you know if I see another hang on boot.
I've noticed that Wayland is no longer an option on the login screen. I
presume this is an expected consequen
I just tested the package from focal-proposed and generated a new CA
certificate with correct Key-Extension Flags.
This fixes the bug for me.

I don't think your issue is the same I got. Note that my problem happened with
or without the dock, and I wasn't even reaching grub. That's the big difference
here. If you lose the video after grub, than your problem is elsewhere, and my
suggestion is to boot without "quiet splash" on
