I gave up on 20.04, and found a HDD with 16.04 installed. I cloned the
drive, and booted up with it, and everything worked great, BUT after I
ran the Software Updater, and installed a huge number of updates, 16.04
exhibited the same symptoms as 20.04, that is, the laptop does not
resume from a
MySQL 8.0 packaging in Ubuntu should put new *.sys files into
/usr/share/mysql-8.0 to make it possible to have old and new libraries
installed *side by side*.
To stress it, this is not a MariaDB issue. This is about MySQL
introducing a backwards incompatible change and it needs to adjust for
it

Just for completeness, I've found the solution.
I googled some more as none of my other snaps were working and found a little
tidbit I hadn’t come across before.
It mentioned something about using the mount system for /root.
My /root was a symlink to /home/root.
I deleted the symlink

As a test, I built a stock 5.6.15 kernel and that seems to be happy with
the SD card reader. I tried different speeds/sizes cards and all were
recognized as expected.
