Oh. If you don't have a /boot/firmware then that will cause all sorts of
issues when upgrading kernel and kernel-related packages. You don't - by
any chance - have some logs from when /boot/firmware was removed?
What's the output of 'mount' from that system? And what does
'/etc/fstab' look like?
Guess I found the reason for this misbehaviour. To use xbacklight I
changed a X11 config file and started the intel driver instead of the
standard modesetting driver. This causes the issue. Back to standard
driver mpv/celluloid runs without the above workaround.
** Changed in: celluloid (Ubuntu)
For me the touchpad has been working properly for weeks when it didn't work
before.
The only problem is ... I didn't make it work, so I have no idea why it started
working. But sometimes (rarely), it doesn't work and you have to turn the
computer back on.

@Kai-Heng, unfortunately that latest kernel you compiled has not solved
it, touchpad is dead with both a cold boot and restart.
Is there a way of running the following:
sudo rmmod i2c_hid
sudo modprobe i2c_hid
automatically at boot?
Apologies if this is what you were trying to do all this time.
Hmm, interesting. I don't have any idea myself how to debug a boot
failure like this I'm afraid. I do have another change queued up that
makes the images more like the ones from June:

That's a very good question.
The failing autopkgtest, was run on an LPAR, which is running OpenStack
Nova, which launched qemu-system kvm, v5.4 Ubuntu kernel, and then run

The patch was posted upstream, see
https://www.spinics.net/lists/netdev/msg666808.html, and accepted by Dave
Miller. I just checked his net-next tree, didn't see it there yet, but I would
assume it will appear there soon.
Let us continue like this: *You* make the images 'more like the ones
from June', and *we* (iso-testers) test how it works in our computers.
I have a good experience from booting USB drives via grub also in BIOS
mode, so I think and hope that we can keep that feature. Via the link in
