Issue 2) was my fault of not properly unmarking all components of the
kernel, so that some of it kept the "manual" status and prevented
removal. But once I severed all those marks, "apt autoremove" could do
it's work.

same for me, it took me ages to figure out the root cause as I was
mislead by libcrypt failure messages at boot time

Thanks for the report.
Just by installing the package I cannot trigger this problem; it
complains that it "cannot find inband device". I wonder what it would
take to have a reproducer for this.

Hi Daniel, as you can see I used the apport tool to send system
information. I also checked if the `gnome-shell` process was still
running. Here's the output of `ps aux | grep gdm | grep shell`, after
login:
