Actually the problem is GNOME related. If you adjust the keyboard layout
to be change with Ctrl+Shift (and not as is by default with
Alt+Shift), these keys are blocked by GNOME and the keyboard layout
changer.

I have an ati mobility x1600 (rv515), Intel Core 2 Duo T7200 (my system

Maybe the same problem in in Lucid Beta1. After booting Windows my
system again was left with useless MBR.
The system message this time is not GRUB LOADING as it is in Karmic but
no module name found

I used this PPA - https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat/+archive/x-updates to
update the X.Org packages and there the only update that actually matters is
the radeon driver version which is 6.13.1.

I'm going to wait a little. Now the system is running without KMS
support and the performance is pretty much the same as in Ubuntu 9.10.
I'll retest with xorg ver. 1.9 and Kernel ver. 2.6.35 when they're

I know about the Nouvoeau driver in Lucid but after Jaunty, the newer
Ubuntu version use at least 100-150 mb more RAM than Jaunty, Intrepid,
Hardy and so on. And this computer is really old after all.

Nope. No effect (or at least not so apparent) can be seen with 2.6.34
and X Server ver. 1.8.1 rc1.

The fix is not released for VLC in Lucid.
However, I've tested VLC under Maverick Alpha 1 and there the problem is fixed.

I've tested the official Ubuntu Firefox package and it's all the same.
The problem occurs in it, too.
P.S. Concerning the unofficial package I use, it's for the smooth scaling of
images option which is turned on in this package. This is the ppa:
