[HP m4] Screen backlight is off after startup.
If testing a patch is not convenient, then use the cmdline option is the same
regarding the above patch.
With the latest upstream kernel, add video.use_native_backlight=1 to kernel
cmdline and see what happens.

will not work on v3.11 kernel.
