I confirm that under an up-to-date Dapper, the problem is still present. I
currently disable the acpi module at each boot (I did not took the time to
automatise it), and wrote a little script that enables the module, outputs the
battery status, and disables the module.

Loading the vga16fb and fbcon modules gets the ttys working again for
me, although their display isn't perfectely centered on screen plus no
Login: prompt appears when switching to them (entering the login works
nevertheless).
Kernel version is 2.6.22-14-generic.

Woops, sorry for the above unhelpful message...
I also tried to create a bootable USB stick using usb-creator, and am
getting GRUB error 17 when trying to boot off the stick on at least two
different machines. It seems that GRUB is not correctly configured on
the stick.

I can reproduce this on one system using an NVIDIA card and nvidia-glx
drivers, one system using an NVIDIA card and nvidia-glx-new drivers, and
one laptop (Acer Travelmate 4000) with an ATI card and no proprietary

I don't think I installed GRUB on the USB key after using usb-creator.
I'm pretty sure I rebooted straight away after using usb-creator.
However, it might be possible that a GRUB install was present on the key
*before* I used usb-creator.

language was not indicated, I chose at random.
I followed the instructions to get the binary package from OpenPrinting.
I had to purge and reinstall cupsys, cupsys-common, foomatic-db and gs-

It looks like this behaviour is now mentioned by the infopage:
If FILE contains a backslash or newline, the line is started with a
backslash, and each problematic character in the file name is escaped
with a backslash, making the output unambiguous even in the presence of
arbitrary file names.
