The solution of Jan Rathmann works on Hardy 64bit with nVidia 8500!
1) added vga16fb, fbcon and vesafb to /etc/initramfs-tools/modules
2) outcommented the blacklisted vesafb and vga16fb in
/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-framebuffer
3) added vga=795 (1280x1024) to the kernel

This morning, after updating Hardy, Nautilus doesn't run properly.
If I type nautilus in command line this is the result:
seahorse nautilus module initialized
** (nautilus:8895): WARNING **: Unable to add monitor: Not supported
Segmentation fault (core dumped)
and nautilus doesn't start!!!

I solved in this way:
1) press Ctrl+Shift+J once for full screen;
2) press Ctrl+Shift+J another time to get normal windows with decoration (for
me, I hope for you too).

No, it's not a Compiz issue. I started an emergency Gnome session
(without start-up scripts and without Compiz in memory) and Openoffice
(1:2.4.0~rc2-1ubuntu3) it's still without window's decoration.

proprietary nvidia driver (no direct rendering and no restricted

When I attempt to modify the screen resolution and I click on apply,
Nvidia-settings hangs up and a popup windows say that it can't parse the

or meteo service with a standard installation of firefox. I see in
