Hi,
sorry for the long time.
I made a memtest on my machine (4 passes) and no problems...
I think the problem is due to GNOME, drivers, or something because aMule can't
freeze the system (runs as normal user...) itself.
If i don't mistake this is a bug that came from a previous update of GNOME,
I just had this bug, too.

Hi Brian Murray, i am so sorry for the so long delay, but i got frustrating
problems to my internet connection for months! Everything is working now and i
can give more info about this problem.
I didn't tried the smartmontools because i already tried a lot of testing
programs in windows
Okay, seems that the new updates (new kernel 2.6.24-20 and related) have solved
the problem.
Till now, since i've upgraded, i have not seen this bug anymore, so is very
likely that it has been solved.

I've find out the way to make partitions to be recognized (thanks Jack_Sparrow,
in #ubuntu :))
Just add to the kernel string the parameter all_generic_ide, at the boot.
However i think Ubuntu should be able to recognize when the system is an old
ide-related-issues one, by itself.

be 34gb).
And it can manage with the entire disk.

today i used GParted a bit again and i've seen that it is also able to access
data on the partitions! (read/write)
So, if you think that could be helpful, i could take some system files used by
GParted and attach them here, in order to understand why GParted manages my
hard-disk so
I think the problem is due to the mobo that it's too old and has the 32gb limit
(not the hd, the mobo itself).
So, i'm changing the bug status to: Invalid.

Public bug reported:
When Ubuntu is loading it sets automatically 800x600 (24 bit) resolution
because 1024x768 fails, but trying GParted Live CD (v0.3) it works normally
with 1024x768 (24 bit) resolution. So, i think this is a bug that could be
easily solved.

I didn't login with the beta; the problem persists also with the normal
launchpad.
However, i've tried to set up an higher resolutions for few moments and there's
no problem, so the bug seems to exist only for low resolutions (800x600 and
lower). I can confirm this.

I think i have found the problem.
Seems that the bug occur only when there is no audio device inserted (or it's
inserted/connected but OFF).
This might be helpful to solve this bug.

i recently tried the latest GParted Livecd, and i took a look at the screen
resolution: it was 800x600 :-/
I would not that maybe i was mistaking when i said GParted is able to load
1024x768 (and ubuntu's not) :-/
Sorry, i was not sure, simply the screen resolution seemed better than
