Yes, I can switch the behaviour on and of by installing or uninstalling
ttf-indic-fonts-core_1%3a0.5.4ubuntu2
So there seems to be a bug in these fonts and/or a bug in the handling
of these fonts in either firefox or pango. I don't know any of these
languages, so deinstalling it is a useful
The cause of the bug is not in ttf-fonts-indic. After a few more
experiments firefox was in a state where it would crash within seconds
of every startup no matter which fonts were installed. Then I went for
the radical way and removed all ttf fonts that were no hard requirements
of other packages
In my case, the cause was that during or shortly after the update some
program seems to have muted the PCM channel without beng told to do so.

I get the ghostscript error every time I try to print the test page with
the foomatic driver in color. There are no line containing audit in
the syslog (except two profile_replace ten minutes earlier when I
changed some settings). I attach another cups error_log with debug log-
level.

I just have to add that the PCL 5c driver is no panacea, either. Apart
from the low resolution, it just garbles a different (and seemingly
smaller) set of output files that the PCL 6 XL driver. Until now the
only reliable way to print a file on a Samsung CLP-610 in Ubuntu 11.10
is to copy the file
For what it's worth, I manually linked the directory with all the cms
files to where the splix driver was looking for it, and it stopped
compaining, but now ghostrscript dies in a way that makes cups think the
printer is offline.

If I write a text in libreoffice and then print it, a random subset of
the characters in the output are replaced with another character (I have
seen ¨ and u in different documents). If I export as PDF, I can print
that document without problems.

laptop mostly unusable, as it arbitrarily messes with the backlight
brightness, turning is so low that you cannot see anything on websites

Installing Windows is not a valid fix for a bug in ubuntu (see also bug
#1), somebody with the appropriate permissions should revert this bug to
Confirmed.
