The problem is real, but there's there's a simple solution. Edit
'/etc/default/grub' and find the line: 'GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT'.
Add 'fastboot' option to the list. After that update grub ('sudo
update-grub'). This is not necessarily a workaround as the problem may
have been an omission in
I'm just making a comment to Confirm this.
The bug post was not specific enough, but I found that there are *NO
sounds* except with the login screen (I don't know if that is related).
Initially I noticed this on after I installed Unity 8. On a fresh
reinstall there were still no sounds.

gtk2 and one for gtk3. I've noticed that no matter what icon set is used
the gtk3 theme is too dark. In other places like in the configuration

Since then, the sound effects have been completely disabled. There is
now a way to control the volume of the startup sounds in Pulseaudio.
But I wish to give second opinion that work be done to restore the
system sounds in Ubuntu.
