Something similar happens to me when right clicking links on pages.
Sometimes add bookmark comes up, sometimes the link opens in a new tab,
sometimes a new window comes up, sometimes the page switches direction.
Most times the menu appears though but it still is very irritating. :)
The problem see
The problem seems to be that the popup menu is displayed on button-down,
not button-up like on Windows. If the mouse is being moved just a little
bit at the same time it might be over an item when the button is
released. This could either be solved by changing the popup to appear on
button release
I've started holding down the button and choose menu items by releasing
it to work around this. Actually, it's quite nice to do it that way.
Still, I think it would be good if a delay was introduced before
releasing the mouse button can choose menu items.

The mouse cursor gets choppy, starts missing input etc. Once it took me
ten minutes to be able to close down Evince. Now this part is of course
not a problem with evinc
I have this problem on Linux Mint 17.1 (Ubuntu 14.04 base) too on a
Lenovo T420s with Optimus graphics using the Nvidia card as primary.
It seems to work as expected if I put the screens in order [LVDS-1-0] --
[VGA-1-0] -- [DP-3] from left to right, but if I put DP-3 in the middle,
