I'm having this same problem on an up to date installation of Oneiric.
I notice it most frequently when running Chrome fully maximised, no
other applications running. Unity launcher also sometimes does not
close when in dodge windows mode. I have discovered that by dragging an
icon, picture,
I'm traveling right now and only have my one usb drive with me. If I
can borrow another one I will try to confirm and get back to you,
otherwise won't be able to respond until I get home in another week or
so.
For what it's worth, this same usb storage device previously worked with
no problems.
Using a Lenovo Ideapad Y550 with integrated Intel everything. I get the
hang whether or not the battery is installed.

I have also found that opening Startup Disk Creator causes usb drives to
be detected and automounted.

As the title says usb storage mounting suddenly stopped working. The
only workaround I have discovered so far is to run Startup Disk Creator.
This causes the usb disk to be detected and then Nautilus automatically
mounts it.

Tested mainline kernel 3.6.0-030600rc5generic. Bug still exists in
upstream kernel. Previously mentioned workaround of opening Startup
Disk Creator still works in upstream kernel as well.
