We had a working set of software.
Now we have a non-working set of software without a feasible workaround (maybe
except for phone camera).
May I kindly ask why don't "we" revert the "improvement" to the previous state
and happily use our scanners for everyday work and fun?

Linking libsane.so.1.0.27 as libsane.so or copying doesn't seem to solve the
problem.
Anyone checked if Debian works with that?

Title:

I have been using (x)sane with my 17.02 without a problem.
After upgrade to 17.10:
- my Xerox WorkCentre 3525 doesn't get detected (editing
/etc/sane.d/xerox_mfp.conf helps though).
- the XSane GUI closes after preview or scan with the following message "Not a
JPEG file: starts with 0x00 0x00"
Installed the prereleased libsane-common, libsane1, sane-utils:
- libsane-common is already the newest version (1.0.27-1~experimental2ubuntu2).
- libsane1 is already the newest version
For Xerox Workcentre 3225 I have mentioned in this and the original sane bug
the solution is:
1. Link the files in /usr/lib/sane to /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/sane,
2. Add the user that needs to use the scanner to the "lp" group.
Otherwise the "Not a JPEG file: starts with 0x00 0x00" issue
For Xerox Workcentre 3225 the solution is:
1. Link the files in /usr/lib/sane to /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/sane,
2. Add the user that needs to use the scanner to the "lp" group.
Otherwise the "Not a JPEG file: starts with 0x00 0x00" issue persists.

Following the PeterPall's suggestion I have moved my "issue" discussion to the
broken scanner list.
Looks like we still keep discussing failure here though. Here are my remarks:
My malfunction hasn't changed a bit with the 1.0.27-1~experimental2ubuntu2.1
package.
Like before xsane crashes with
To be exact, when specified in xerox_mfp.conf with tcp , the device
gets detected.
The problem is that an attempt to scan or acquire a preview results in an error
and the Workcentre remains in "scanning" forever - kind of hang. I wouldn't
call it "being functional".
Above means that despite
Xerox Workcentre 3225 with the drivers version 1.00.25:00.05 that used to work
very well with Zesty's libsane still not functional.
My malfunction hasn't changed a bit with the 1.0.27-1~experimental2ubuntu2.1
package.
Like before xsane crashes with the following message:
Not a JPEG file:
Forgot to mention that I use or rather attempt to use the scanner over
the TCP.

Please note that on a Dell laptop everything works as expected. The
difference most probably is caused by hardware in the laptop. Two
different modems do not work with Toshiba and both of them work with
Dell. The same up-to-date "focal fossa" system.
