I have the same problem both on Intrepod 8.10 and Jaunty 9.04 with
totem-gstreamer plugin.
I need this badly because when my grandfather watches a movie on
bestrussiantv.com and it gets interrupted, he has to restart it and
position to where he got dropped, but the slider on Totem stays dead.

Peter, try to MUTE then UNMUTE the audio in the volume control. I need to do
this regularly. Hope it works, should be easier than reboot...

Same problem, on all my computers, default configuration ubuntu 10.04.
One would expect that it should be possible to switch user and still use
audio out of the box.
Will check the audio group settings tonight.

System - Administration - Users and Groups - Advanced Settings - User
Privileges
Uncheck Use audio devices, repeat for all users

I tried to install Ubuntu 8.04 and 9.04 -- both froze before
installation even started, even verify disk does not work. (and the
disk is ok, i checked on other PC)
I successfully installed OpenSUSE --- it has the same problem Works only
until I start Software Update
openSUSE kernel 2.6.31.5
IT WORKS!
Kudos to michael37, connected laptop via wired network, and all system updates
went through.
Once System Updates completed, the wireless driver has been fixed, and now I
have no more lock ups with OpenSUSE.
next step: reinstalling Ubuntu, and once that works too I will close
this

Add a shortcut on all user's desktops, when clicked it will execute command:
sudo pkill nm-applet;sleep 2; nm-applet

I started update process and came back an hour later to a blank screen.
After reboot Ubuntu was loading but instead of login it came to a black

Looks like an updated nvidia driver could not handle configuration.
