As far as I can tell alacarte never broke the actual .desktop file, it
just rendering it's contents incorrectly. Either way, this should be

Human will remain the default icon set for Ubuntu for the forseeable
future. Mark has said that he wants Ubuntu to have it's own look, not
just use Tango icons and look like every other distro. Personally, I'd
prefer the Tangerine icon set as it's an Ubuntu-themed version of Tango
and thus fits in
Then why not simply move this package to multiverse and enable
everything? As an iPod owner trying to get DVDs converted to h264 it's a
real pain having to maintain my own ffmpeg package and keep it up-to-
date.

They're able to opem more windows because they use nvidia-glx-new.
Something that might have been helping you before was --indirect-
rendering which completely broken on nvidia-glx-new and caused problems
otherwise so we stopped using it by default.

This was disabled in switcher because it is very jerky for most people
and we had requests from people to get rid of it anyway because they
didn't like it. You wanting it doesn't trump technical issues plus
someone not wanting it.

Do you have an xorg.conf file? Can you try moving it out of the way
(move it to your home dir or something) and starting X without an
xorg.conf to see if that helps? It sounds like you're not picking up the
options in Xorg that are needed to make this work right.
