This isn't an issue either in FF3 on 8.10. It does not create the
~/.mozilla/plugins, but the installation of Flash is flawless and it
works fine.

This isn't an issue anymore on a fresh install of 8.10. Both filetypes,
with and without the fancy characters, are recognized as text/plain. I

Um sure, here you go. But when it failed to initialize, I told it to
use the recommended settings, so my resolution is back to normal now and
on the drivers that were before.
I also just reinstalled the nvidia driver, going to reboot now to see if

I can confirm that Silviu Julean's latest test case did work for me.
I can also confirm that Nick B.'s suggestion solved it! Both the test case,
and the 'http://www.themareks.com/xf/conspiracy.shtml' link go through just
fine.

Looks like your drivers are a bit messed up, that's why ubuntu is
defaulting to the lowest, but safest setting. To fix this, try
installing envy:

After you got it installed, go to Applications - System
Just to let you know, that size is fine. I had Google Desktop having a
1GB cache before too.
(I myself dislike these kinds of programs now and just remove them)
