I can confirm the above problem. It can be reproduced by using apt-get
from the command line. It is not even possible to remove mysql-server
before re-trying it. Whatever you do apt-get first tries to replace

This bug has been reported with earlier versions and is still present.
Well, it's not the first time that mysql fails during upgrades...

I can confirm the issue. My System is Ubuntu 14.04 LTS + Gnome Shell
(installed manually because I hate Unity). I have just upgraded my
system from Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. Very disapointing to see that 14.04 is
still having major issues and that nobody is taking care about it
because they igone Gnome.

The issue can be fixed by installing the following Gnome extension:
https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/851/flash-fullscreen-fix/. It
would be nice if the functionality of this extension could be integrated
into gnome-shell by default. It is a desaster if flash videos could not
be played in a de
I am also affected by this problem. The previous comment of Dee is
wrong. Passwords can be successfully put into "". When choosing a
password like "a, b" mount outputs "mount error(22): Invalid argument".
But dmesg reports "CIFS: Unknown mount option " b".
This clearly indicates a software problem

This bug seems to be fixed in some way. There is a new package
5.1.41-3ubuntu12.3. When updating, the users receives a strange error
message, but the update process continues.
However, there seems to be a problem, running mysql-server on the
current version of Ubuntu 10.04.

I can confirm that this is a very old bug. There seems to be a fix by
using the original package from Debian. It would be nice if this would
be fixed in Ubuntu, too.
