I believe this is related to thumbnail handling. It seems that thunar
recreates the thumbnails on every scroll event. So if one disables 'Show
thumbnails' in the preferences, scrolling is very fast. This behavior is
also found for mtp connections.

Yes, the camera mode is the PTP mode described above. If I choose MTP
mode i.e. media device mode, I can list files in a file manager fast,
but not read them at all. This goes for both file managers.
