[Bug 1575655] Re: the network indicator shows the wrong status
I have this problem in Xubuntu 16.04 with HWE kernel, on my Thinkpad X1 carbon 4th gen (2016). uname -a: Linux Godel 4.10.0-42-generic #46~16.04.1-Ubuntu SMP Mon Dec 4 15:57:59 UTC 2017 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux lspci | grep -i network: 04:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation Wireless 8260 (rev 3a) I've been using: killall nm-applet; nm-applet & very regularly in the past couple of weeks when I've been using a different wifi router. I don't think this was happening to me in the past. Has anyone seen a change in behaviour, whether due to updates or change in usual physical location? Another Thinkpad on the same network with the same install and kernel, an old X120e running an AMD cpu and a Realtek RTL8188CE wireless card, does *not* seem to exhibit this problem. i.e., nm-applet shows the correct icon and shows all available wifi APs after multiple suspend resume cycles. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1575655 Title: the network indicator shows the wrong status To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/indicator-applet/+bug/1575655/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1575655] Re: the network indicator shows the wrong status
In my case the network indicators are now fine. The problem is that the wi-fi goes to sleep within minutes and the restart comes back without any wi-fi signal at all. The only way out is to reboot. The strange thing is that if I run https://fast.com/ the Net speed riches the highest values, while other sites stay blocked. Another upsetting thing is that after some Ubuntu updates the system freezes within minutes from start and I can only use the previous kernel until a new, likely working, update.

Hi, After testing some more, restarting the networkmanager does fix the issue for me too. However, it doesn't make sense, to me, to restart the whole service to fix this issue. Restarting the applet makes more sense to me. I have found a way to automatically restart nm-applet each time the machine resumes from a suspend. Disclaimer!! ((This is only a (hack/temporary-fix/work-around) as it doesn't address the cause of the issue.)) Short description of solution: I created a script that kills nm-applet at suspend|hibernate, then starts another nm-applet on resume|thaw. Then I placed it in (etc/pm/sleed.d) and named it "90_Restart_nm-applet" and made it executable. Specific steps taken: 1- Download attached script (90_Restart_nm-applet) 2- Open a terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) 5- type in "sudo nautilus" without the quotations and enter your password. **PLEASE DO NOT DO ANYTHING, OTHER THAN THE FOLLOWING STEPS , IN THIS FILE MANAGER WINDOW (NAUTILUS), INCLUDING DELETING, RENAMING, AND MOVING FILES. IT WILL MESS WITH THE OWNERSHIP OF AND ACCESS TO FILES** <-- headache to track fix. 6- navigate to the downloaded script (90_Restart_nm-applet) and copy it. It is probably in your downloads folder in /Home//Downloads. 7- navigate to /etc/pm/sleep.d 8- paste (90_Restart_nm-applet) there, then right click it, and select properties. 9- go to (Permissions) tab and check (Allow executing file as program). 10- close properties menu and file manager (Nautilus) done. Someone might be able to write terminal commands to do this, I don't know how to. Now the nm-applet should restart whenever the system resumes from a suspend. Few things to note: a- I'm running UBUNTU 16.10 with a UNITY 7.5.0. Kernel... I posted my info in a precious comment... b- Because of (a), the address at which your script to be placed might be different than mine. Do some research. I found mine in an answer by (fader) here: "http://askubuntu.com/questions/92218/how-to-execute-a-command-after-resume-from-suspend; <--- a good place to start. Please keep in mind that this doesn't fix the underlying issue, it is only a work-around. As such, it may create more issues than the one it fixes. [Bug 1575655] Re: the network indicator shows the wrong status
Restarting nm-applet fixes it for me every time. Just to be clear about the issue: WIFI works fine from a fresh boot, and after resume from suspend, it connects to any automatically configured network. Problem (Issue): 1-After resume, nm-applet (network indicator) icon does one of the following randomly every time: a- shows a wired connection icon. b- shows no connection icon. In both cases (1-a or 1-b), 3- the wifi is connected and working. I Confirmed using a web browser. 4- the list doesn't show available wifi networks or the current connected network. It shows a "disconnect" button though The main problem is that I cannot connect to a different wifi-network due to issue (4). And if for some reason I lost connection, I cannot reconnect. restarting "network-manager.service" doesn't fix the issue for me. Fix for me: Restart nm-applet. I used the following method: 1- run gnome-system-monitor. 2- in the processes tab, look for (nm-applet). 3- select it and press "End Process" 4- confirm "End Process" in the dialog. 5- start a terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) or press (Alt+F2) 6- type in "nm-applet" and enter after the fix, the network-indicator shows the correct icon and signal strength for wifi. & in the list, I could see all available wifi connections. [Bug 1575655] Re: the network indicator shows the wrong status
On my Lenovo YOGA 300 it seems that the bug might be related with "time" or "weakening" of the WI-FI signal: all works fine initially but then within tens of minutes the network icon and the Network itself goes OFF I can give it a shake and reset it with the Network applet and the first few times the icon reflects the resetting but then it goes on Wired or NO-WIFI even if the network is fine and signal strength OK or GOOD. [Bug 1575655] Re: the network indicator shows the wrong status
Some additions: -Happens on Lenovo T420s too. I don't think it is truly hardware related. -Adding another user account and switching to and back leads to an even more arkward situation, where nm-applet creates a new connection if an already known WiFi network is selected (and asks for the password again). One can easily crate tens of connections by trying to connect again and again. It seems user rights on the connections may be the cause for this problem. The same thing happes sometimes if nm-applet is just restarted. So I guess nm-applet is sometimes unable to read the whole state, and thus create new connections or don't reflect state. So I would look for multi-user setups first to reproduce this bug.

Funny thing is, I don't see anything like this on a handful of other machines. Possible explanations: 1) Could be hardware-related. Yeah, I'd like to add that this definitely happens after suspend for me -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1575655 Title: the network indicator shows the wrong status To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/indicator-applet/+bug/1575655/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1575655] Re: the network indicator shows the wrong status
The initial state of the indicator after login is correct BUT if I for example reconnect my USB adapter, the wifi state goes out of sync (i.e. the wifi would reconnect but the new 'connected' state is not reflected in the indicator (i.e. wifi list not shown and wifi icon does not appear)). This is on a fresh 16.04 installation using a USB Wifi Adapter.
I'm able to solve it ..temporarily by restart nework-manager service but after wakeup from suspend mode it comes back ...
Nevermind, installing those packages does not fix the problem. After a fresh boot, everything looks as expected. But after suspend the whole wifi part of network-manager might be gone again. Reastarting the network-manager service resets it.
Had the same problem, there was no wireless information at all. Installing indicator-applet and indicator-network fixed it for me.
