for a while I thought it was just the kxstudio repo wasn't reachable
because it looked like that was where it was hanging up but I removed
those repos and got the same results so add me to the club.

I get the same thing. "Failed to download repository information. Check
your internet connection." Every single time. If you click "Settings"
then "Close" (with the new window) the software updater will magically
update and either offer new updates to download or say "The software on
this computer
