I found a temporary solution. If I insert a cheap usb hub (USB
2.0) then the Ipod is found and installed without problems.

I have tested on a new laptop (acer c910 chromebook ) using Linux
Mint 17.3 (Rosa) XFCE 64 bits with kernel 3.19.0-32-generic X86_64 and
all OK.
This time Ipod was mounted using xhci_hcd.
