Public bug reported:

1)
Installed kernel: linux-image-4.4.0-21-generic was the currently running kernel
post-upgrade from xenial to yakkety

2) looked up linux-image-4.8.0-22-generic and marked it for install

3) went to 'obsolete and locally created packages' and hit 'r' to see
what options aptitude would provide

There was a lot of packages there -- I was not able to remove the
packages at the end of the upgrade process because wifi was not working.
linux-image-4.4.0-21-generic must have been among them in retrospect

4) hit 'g' twice to start the upgrade - eventually I was met with a 'W'
message saying that the current running kernel was being removed. This
activity for quite a few versions of debian/ubuntu has brought a user
prompt asking the user to make sure yo knows what they are doing. This
prompt did not come up, instead aptitude removed the current running
kernel and continued on installing the next version of the kernel
(4.8.0)

While in this case, it *may* seem like Linux 4.8.0 was able to install
successfully, I have seen kernels that have not. If one of *those*
kernels was the one that was replacing 4.4.0, the system would have been
left in an unbootable state(and may yet be in one). This is a good
reason why Aptitude should have prompted me upon attempting to remove
it, I would have certainly said to not continue.
