It turns out this issue was caused by a short circuit in the display cable. So
I take that back as a symptom of this bug.

[Bug 1643566] Re: [i915_bpo] Intermittent display outage with external monitor

2017-04-03 Thread winnie
Hope the information helps, at least somebody else:

Exact same issue on Skylake-desktop PCs. Tested on 12 PCs in our pc lab.
Getting the trace in boot log on every single one. It appears short
after boot, by the time lightdm shows up. All machines run with two
displays.

MB/BIOS: MSI MS-7971/Z170-A PRO (MS-7971), BIOS 1.D0 08/30/2016
CPU: i3-6100

So far there are no issues visible except the coredump/trace. We had,
however, one machine which lost video signal ~one sec after lightdm
showed up. X was still running (since I could login blindly via
lightdm). The issue disappeared after we started benchmarking the
machine. Can't reproduce anymore.

After installing the proposed kernel from canonical-kernel-team ppa the
issue seems resolved.

Any idea when the patch hits v4.4.0?

[Bug 1643566] Re: [i915_bpo] Intermittent display outage with external monitor

2016-12-15 Thread dwmw2
Not sure if this is a related issue. HP 850 G3 laptop with docking
station, external VGA connected.

If the display blanks for more than an instant, the external display
doesn't come back on until I undock and redock. This is OK:

$ xset dpms force off; xset dpms force on

This, on the other hand, leaves me with no external display:

$ xset dpms force off; sleep 0.1 ; xset dpms force on

Also possibly related or the same problem: if I dock with the VGA cable
unplugged, and plug the VGA cable in, the external display is detected.
Unplug, and it goes away. Plug it in for a second time and it's not
detected again until I undock and redock, just like after a screen
blank.

This persists after updating to 4.8.0-32-generic #34~16.04.1-Ubuntu

Hmm, no problems related to it in that log, i915 would be more verbose.
I just noticed the trace in the subject was caused by a lid close/open
and is most likely not related. It would be worth trying this out to
rule out the Intel X driver, save this as /etc/X11/xorg.conf

2016-12-13 Thread Leann Ogasawara
Claire was able to retest with the 4.8.0-31.33~16.04.1 Yakkety HWE
kernel. She says the problem is still happening (ie. screen crashes and
goes blank after about 20min). She captured her dmesg output after
reproducing the issue with 4.8.0-31.33~16.04.1. I have attached it
here, but am not seeing anything obvious, but would be good to get some
second opinions. Thanks.

+ W550s - same issue with the blank screen on both laptops. Happens every

+ black).

2016-12-08 Thread Robert Hooker
The full dmesg on the machine with a kernel newer than
4.8.0-28.30~16.04.1 after it happens and not just the trace would be
much appreciated as well. That patch series really should have fixed it.
The full /var/log/kern.log would work even better.

2016-11-22 Thread Leann Ogasawara
Pasting some of my commentary here

After further discussion with the team, I'm told this is a known issue
with Skylake. This should be resolved in v4.9 and backports have been
submitted to v4.8:

https://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/intel-
gfx/2016-October/109936.html

I have asked sabdfl to proceed with testing the Yakkety HWE kernel to
confirm this is indeed resolved for Claire. Note, I specficially
requested testing with the linux-hwe-edge 4.8.0-28.30~16.04.1 from our
Canonical Kernel Team PPA since it contains the i915 patches referenced
above.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:canonical-kernel-team/ppa

It would be good to know what type of activity causes this bug. Does it
happen only when using video in you're browser, such as youtube? Does
it only happen when using Google Hangouts? Or, can you trigger the
screen blanking when only using a single application, such as email?

** Description changed:

Filing on behalf of Claire Newman...

I seem to be tickling a bug in the i915 stack, when I use a desktop

- comes back . This happens every few minutes, and in dmesg I see the
- below text.
