I receive the following warning:

1. Start a separate VT login: Ctrl+Alt+F4, and log in.
2. Return to lightdm (Ctrl+Alt+F7) and attempt a Gnome login.
3. After it fails return to Ctrl+Alt+F4 and take a copy of the log using this
command:
journalctl /usr/bin/gnome-shell > gnome-shell.log
4. Attach
I have an nvidia/intel hybrid GPU (GTX-850M), with nvidia proprietary
drivers (nvidia-375) from the supported drivers PPA. The attempt failed
when using the intel GPU, so the nvidia part is not involved. Using GDM
I could load a fully functional Wayland session.

That might be true, but NVIDIA isn't mentioned anywhere in this bug.

I don't think the open source NVIDIA graphics drivers support GNOME on
Wayland in Ubuntu 16.04 LTS.
