If you upgraded straight from 1:5.4.1-0ubuntu1 to 1:5.4.5-0ubuntu0.17.10.4 (without the intermediate 1:5.4.5-0ubuntu0.17.10.1 update), then the apparmor profiles haven't been disabled. That's known, another update is being prepared to address this. Uninstalling the libreoffice-kde package helped. Actually it's not just inserting image that crashes the program. Anything that opens the file system does that.
