[Bug 1759950] Re: Lid-close suspend: blank screen when switching to user session

2019-06-23 Thread TJ
Tested with the 19.10 daily (2019-06-22) amd64 build and the problem
affects the live environment too.

Set x-p-m Lid Close action on battery to suspend and the 2nd lid close
cycle results in DPMS=off when the GUI TTY is active.

As in comment #15 I monitored the LVDS DPMS state whilst switching
between TTYs:

$ while true; do grep .
/sys/class/drm/card0-LVDS-1/{dpms,enabled,status}; sleep 1; done

This also confirms the locker isn't implicated since, as I understand
it, it is disabled in the live environment (and I saw no password
challenge dialog even when specifically pressing the 'Lock' icon on the
menu.)

So even with a 1000 u-second delay and retry, repeated 5 times, the issue
remains. This looks like a problem with the underlying libraries.

The return value of 3 is RRSetConfigFailed from
libxrandr::src/XrrCrtc.c::XRRSetCrtcConfig()

Tracking it back further looks to be extremely difficult.

I'm attaching the complete xfsettingd log for these successful + failed
cycles in case someone with more insight than me can spot more clues.

[Bug 1759950] Re: Lid-close suspend: blank screen when switching to user session

2019-06-18 Thread TJ
Finally found some evidence and it is surprising.

I added /usr/local/bin/xfce4-power-manager:

#!/bin/sh
exec /usr/bin/xfce4-power-manager --debug

and logged in as normal. Confirmed x-p-m is writing debug messages.

Closed the lid, it suspended, opened lid and tap key to resume as per
usual.

There were no new messages from x-p-m but there are two very relevant
from another sub-system with microsecond precision timestamps.

I captured the boot log with similar precision timestamps using:

$ journalctl -o short-iso-precision -b --since="12:53:03"
--until="12:53:05"

and have interleaved the messages:

2019-06-18T12:53:04.275008+0100 Asus-F5-01 kernel: Enabling non-boot CPUs ...

What confuses me about this is that the timestamps of xfsettingsd appear
to be before the kernel restarts tasks.

However, if these are accurate, it seems to show the display isn't re-
enabled at that time, which might explain how the internal state of the
user session gets confused and as a result thinks the DPMS state is
still 'off'.

[Bug 1759950] Re: Lid-close suspend: blank screen when switching to user session

2019-06-17 Thread TJ
Yet more results changing the target once again!

I was able to reproduce the issue whilst using sddm which tends to
suggest lightdm may not be the cause.

I also managed to prove (not sure why this did not occur to me before
now!) that the DPMS state is being set 'off' when switching to the GUI
tty and 'on' when switching away.

In a console TTY I had:

$ while true; do grep .
/sys/class/drm/card0-LVDS-1/{dpms,enabled,status}; sleep 1; done

And then switched to the GUI and closed the lid. After resuming from
suspend and unlocking the GUI blanked. Switching to the console TTY
showed that whilst on the GUI TTY

dpms=off

which changes to

dpms=on

when switching away from it.

This tends to point pack towards xfce4-power-manager and upower since,
as I currently understand it, they specifically 'do' DPMS 'stuff'.

Certainly x-p-m has a lot of DPMS handling code and user-config
properties exposed.

2019-06-17 Thread TJ
maxpus=1 still suffers the same issue.

I then disabled and stopped the upower daemon but the issue remains with
the only common factors being systemd-logind and lightdm.

I tried console-only tests with lightdm stopped and CANNOT reproduce the
issue.

I installed sddm and changed the default display manager to use it:

apt install --no-install-recommends sddm

Tested with logind + sddm and CANNOT reproduce the issue.

Re-enabled upower via the x-p-m applet.

Tested with logind + sddm + upower/x-p-m and CANNOT reproduce the issue.

Tested with logind + sddm + upower/x-p-m + light-locker and CANOT
reproduce the issue (note: light-locker dies at some point so no
password dialog on resume).

Based on all this it seems to point the finger at ---> lightdm

[Bug 1759950] Re: Lid-close suspend: blank screen when switching to user session

2019-06-17 Thread TJ
I purged both xfce4-screensaver and light-locker packages, restarted
lightdm and tested with x-p-m set to suspend on lid-close for battery
(and AC as I've had the battery exhaust several times due to the length
of these tests!)

In this case there is no password challenge dialog on resume.

It failed on 1st suspend-resume cycle. GUI TTY blanked, but console TTYs
are fine.

I was thinking back to the tests I did when this first hit 18.04 (when I
reported this bug originally) and seem to recall that adding debug
logging was enough to prevent the failure and led me to hypothesise this
is a race condition.

I'm going to try booting the systems with maxcpus= 1 and 0.

[Bug 1759950] Re: Lid-close suspend: blank screen when switching to user session

2019-06-16 Thread TJ
On brainwash's suggestion (IRC #xubuntu-devel) I disabled UPower's Lid
handling with /etc/UPower/UPower.conf:

IgnoreLid=true

After six suspend-resume cycles this does seem to have prevented the issue.

*However* I then noticed that in the x-p-m dialog, General tab, the
options to control the Lid Close policy are completely missing - which
isn't really a solution.

This just seems to confirm the bug here is in the interactions of x-p-m
/light-locker and logind.

Update: Disabling x-p-m Security > Lock screen when system is going to

This definitely feels like some weird interaction with x-p-m, light-

[Bug 1759950] Re: Lid-close suspend: blank screen when switching to user session

2019-06-16 Thread TJ
I've done some more tests with another clean install of 19.04; The only
user setting I changed was on x-p-m for Laptop Lid Closed, On Battery =
suspend.

1st suspend=resume cycle is fine; user session re-appears after
unlocking with password

*BUT*

2nd suspend-resume cycle turns the LCD panel off after unlocking with
password (greeter with password dialog is show, LCD is turned off as
soon as session is unlocked.

This is repeatable via using a TTY to "sudo systemctl restart lightdm"

So it seems as if there's some runtime option getting mixed up here.

This is the ignore logind config:

[Bug 1759950] Re: Lid-close suspend: blank screen when switching to user session

2019-06-15 Thread TJ
More search seems to point to a 2015 commit that integrated light-locker
into xfce4-power-manager. This patch in particular appears to attempt to
work with logind Lid handling too:

commit 10076da7caa49320b3e907d319a9f27ee6702969
Author: Sean Davis

Light Locker Integration (Bug #11488)

Integrate Light Locker configuration into Xfce Power Manager. This
allows proper settings synchronization between the two applications
and eliminates some of the hackiness used in Light Locker Settings
to accomplish the same effect, and streamlines similar tools into
a single location. This depends on light-locker 1.5.1 configured
with the GSettings backend.

[Bug 1759950] Re: Lid-close suspend: blank screen when switching to user session

2019-06-15 Thread TJ
Turns out this *is* systemd-logind and xfce4-power-manager fighting over
the lid close event.

It can be solved with:

echo "HandleLidSwitch=ignore" | sudo tee -a /etc/systemd/logind.conf
echo "HandleLidSwitchExternalPower=ignore" | sudo tee -a
/etc/systemd/logind.conf

If you're doing this change from a TTY console whilst the GUI session
has gone dark, then simply:

$ sudo systemctl restart lightdm

Just having upgraded several laptops to 19.04 and been hit by this

suspect this is caused by some interaction with the power manager and
