This change has been landed in bionic-proposed. As far as I can tell
it's "verification-done" -- I can succesfully install on UEFI systems no
problem, and /sys/firmware/efi/efivars is indeed mounted.
Unfortunately, I have no way to make sure it's indeed fixed since I have
never been able to reprod

Accepted ubiquity into bionic-proposed. The package will build now and
be available at
