It sounds like this is the same as bug #215802, so I'm going to mark
this one as a duplicate. As noted there, the fix for this issue will
come via backports-modules-wireless after v2.6.38 final is released.

I wonder if this issue (the issues still seen in recent releases at
least) might have the same root cause as this one:

http://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/215802

I've provided some test kernels for lucid and maverick that have shown
good results so far. Any testing to see whether they help with the
problems reported here would be appreciated.

[Bug 182473] Re: rtl8187 drops connection

2009-11-22 Thread Michael Jensen
This bug still causes issues on 9.10 karmic. The wifi signal drops out
after a while of being connected and while connected the system seems to
hang intermittently for no reason. While hanging, the active application
(usually firefox for me) greys out, but the CPU load (according to the
System Monitor) does not increase.

I tried to apply the patch found at the aircrack-ng website, but the
build failed (I presume that's due to Karmic having a new kernel).

If there's been any changes, I'd be happy to try out patches and etc.

[Bug 182473] Re: rtl8187 drops connection

2009-07-10 Thread kernel-janitor
[This is an automated message. Apologies if it has reached you
inappropriately.]

This bug was flagged as having a patch attached. The Ubuntu Kernel
Team's preferred policy is for all patches to be submitted and accepted
into the upstream kernel before agreeing to merge them into the Ubuntu
kernel. The goal for the Ubuntu kernel is to have little to no
divergence from the upstream linux kernel source.

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/KernelPatches has been written to
document the suggested policy and procedures for helping get a patch
merged upstream and subsequently into the Ubuntu kernel. Please take
the time to review that wiki if this patch should be considered for
inclusion into the upstream and Ubuntu kernel. Let us know if you have
any questions or need any help via the Ubuntu Kernel Team mailing list.
Thanks in advance.

[Bug 182473] Re: rtl8187 drops connection

2009-07-07 Thread ChrisLees
I'm not being offered a 2.6.30 kernel - the latest I've got is 2.6.28-12
(jaunty).

I've found that:

1. Manually decreasing the wireless speed does increase the data rate
(maximum 12mbps is not really good enough for what I want to do though)

2. Uploading data to my home server will kill the connection very
quickly - usually within a minute. The Ubuntu ISOs are a good test. This
confirms what others were saying about peer-to-peer software killing the
connection - it's the uploads, not the downloads.

I now have Homeplug so I don't have to live with this, but I'll test
what I can.

2009-07-07 Thread Rocko
@ChrisLees: If you want to try a more recent kernel in Jaunty, you can
do so manually by going to http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-
ppa/mainline/v2.6.30/, which has the 2.6.30 kernel deb packages, eg if
you are running 32-bit Ubuntu:

linux-image-2.6.30-020630-generic_2.6.30-020630_i386.deb
linux-headers-2.6.30-020630-generic_2.6.30-020630_i386.deb
linux-headers-2.6.30-020630_2.6.30-020630_all.deb

Install them with sudo dpkg -i name of deb package.

2009-06-28 Thread ignorant
I tested Karmic Alpha 2 (kernel 2.6.30-8) via liveCD (actually it was a
USB stick :) ). The driver reports stronger signal, it went from 15% in
Jaunty to 65% in Karmic, although I 'm not really sure whether this
really means anything or they just changed the method of measurement.
Connection seems more stable, e.g. temporary disconnects in OpenArena
last shorter ;) .Not that I have any serious problems in Jaunty. I will
also check with Skype.

[Bug 182473] Re: rtl8187 drops connection

2009-06-26 Thread Jim Lieb
There have been a number of fixes to this driver since the last testing
for this bug. Can you confirm this issue exists with the most recent
Jaunty Jackalope 9.04 release -
http://www.ubuntu.com/news/ubuntu-9.04-desktop . If the issue remains
in Jaunty, Please also try the Alpha release of Karmic.

Please report back both success(es) and failures. If it fails, run the
following command from a Terminal (Applications-Accessories-Terminal).
It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to
this report.

apport-collect -p linux-image-2.6.28-11-generic bug #

Note: use this bug number and the latest kernel you tried.

If you could also test the latest upstream kernel available that would
be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine this
issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once
you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-
testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon
next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and
deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your
results.

Thanks in advance.

[Bug 182473] Re: rtl8187 drops connection

2009-06-08 Thread ignorant
For me it's working perfectly since kernel 2.6.27-13. Everyone has
different experience, but we must not forget that we are dealing with
wireless networks here, unreliable and unpredictable by nature. A lot of
things can influence the performance of the wireless device, distance
from the access point, physical hurdles in between etc. So before we put
the blame to the linux driver, we should always compare with the
performance in the Windows environment to confirm that we are indeed
affected by a bug and not by bad antenna position or anything else. Have

Oh, Im sorry, I did not mean to blame linux drivers, its just that I was
hoping that it would get fixed someday near. Windows works fine with
this one so I am sure its a bug although its true some people have
reported fully working wireless connection therefore it must be
something else. Thank you for your time.

Overnight test downloading and seeding the most popular torrent on the
piratebay was successful. However, there seems a period of time after
torrenting that network connections are extremely slow. It took over 3
minutes to load www.speedtest.net, however I got the same speeds as
reported before. I don't know what would cause it, possibly deluge
doesn't shutdown properly? Who knows, anyway, the new kernel makes the
rtl8187 function properly. I have a Rosewill RNX-G1W and a NetGear
WG111v2 and both function as they should.

[Bug 182473] Re: rtl8187 drops connection

2009-05-21 Thread Rocko
@malfist: if you just want to test it, try moving your
/etc/X11/xorg.conf file to something different like /etc/X11/xorg.conf-
ati so that X boots with the open-source ATI driver (which works fine if
you don't need high-performance 3d performance for games).

If the 2.6.30 kernel fixes this bug and you want to keep it, you could
remove the restricted driver and either try installing the ATI driver
using envy-ng or download the Catalyst driver from AMD and install it
manually. I think I read somewhere though that the non-free ATI drivers
from AMD don't yet work with the latest kernel.

2009-05-21 Thread malfist
Holy cow the Kernel Dev's are awesome!

Connection signal went from ~10% to ~85%
No disconnects
Tested with 60+ connections on bittorrent, normally this would cause a
disconnect in less than five minutes.
Connection speed dropped by ~.1 MB/s (upload unaffected)

Results of speed testing:

rtl8187, new kernel:
Down1.44
Up 0.24

rtl8187, new kernel, after bittorrenting: (felt slower so I tested it)
Down 1.32
Up 0.22

rtl8187, old kernel:
Down 1.58
Up 0.22

iphone:
down1.09
up 0.24

Will run extended tests overnight. Had to completely uninstall ATI's
restricted driver.

[Bug 182473] Re: rtl8187 drops connection

2009-05-19 Thread wtan
I'm having even worse problem on Jaunty, 64-bit, with the most recent
kernel (2.6.28-11-generic). My device (AWUS036H, RTL8187L chipset) does
appear to create a connection to the router and even obtains ip address,
but drops after 10-15 seconds. Also my network manager (wicd) fails to
show correct signal level, making everything look as -1 dbm. I need
not to reboot or even plug off my device in order to reconnect, but
after reconnecting it would drop after a few seconds again... :(

Tried 2.6.28.1-grsec, rtl8187 problems remain.
@Spreech, @Bellis: please note that the backported r8187 driver does not suport
wpa/wpa2.

[Bug 182473] Re: rtl8187 drops connection

2009-01-30 Thread HW71
@Spreech, @Bellis

Please have a look at the steps provided by Saul D. B. in post #122:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/182473/comments/122

As mentioned earlier (in post # 124 by me) using these backported
drivers solved most of my problems. The signal strength is much better,
wicd doesn't hang any more and the connection drops are gone now!

After updating the kernel to 2.6.27.11 yesterday I had to recompile the
driver modules and perform the steps as listed by Saul D. B. again, but
that's not a problem at all!

[Bug 182473] Re: rtl8187 drops connection

2009-01-29 Thread Spreech
Hello,

I have Toshiba Satellite L300-D with Realtek RTL8187b Chip ID 8198.
Using Ubuntu 8.10.

With the new kernel update 2.6.27.11 the network card is detected automatically
(which has not happened before).
And I can confirm the problems mentioned above.

I have to fix the rate to 11M to use the internet but it is not the fastest of
course.
With 54M I can not use the internet.

I have the Realtek RTL8187b wireless card also, and the signal is just
too weak to have any kind of connection. The driver really needs a good

the signal would just suddenly drop, now the signal is too weak. Ive not
had this working on a fully up to date intrepid. :(

I’m using ubuntu 9.4 (jaunty jackalope) and still report the same problem. When
I next to the wireless rooter and the signal is strong I don’t have any
problem. When the signal his week the connection starts to drop.
So workaround I use the command:

iwconfig wlan1 rate 11M fixed

and Works fine
When I was using the 8.4 with a patch it works fine. With the upgrades to 8.10
and 9.40 I couldn’t get to work right.

[Bug 182473] Re: rtl8187 drops connection

2009-01-20 Thread Matt
I'm new to Linux (Ubuntu 64bit) and despite the tinkering required to get it
working, I love it.
My Toshiba laptop (dual boot with Vista) has one of these internal USB
Wireless devices with the RTL8187B chipset. In the 7.x version of Ubuntu, I
tried all the published hacks to get it working but could not get wpa/wpa2 to
work.
When I installed 8.10, it detected my D-Link dir-615 (WPA2) and connected
without a fuss. Later, I used the 5.5m hack described previously and have
since had a solid connection in different parts of the house without any drops.
Therefore, I was surprised when connecting at Starbucks (ATT Wifi no
encryption) that the signal kept dropping every few minutes and would require
either disabling/enabling Network Manager applet or reboot, as described by
other posters. Vista shows strong signal and never drops.
I've looked at the relevant system log messages, have done google searches
etc... but cannot come up with anything.

[Bug 182473] Re: rtl8187 drops connection

2009-01-16 Thread Skerit
I have to confirm this bug.

I'm using a Toshiba Satellite Toshiba L350-107 (Model PSLD0E)
This is the chip info: Intel® PRO/Wireless 3945ABG (802.11a/b/g)

On 8.04 I had to manually download the linux drivers and install them, they
worked quite well (except the frequent disconnect)
On 8.10 these drivers were in the kernel, but now I get disconnected after a
second or too and it nearly never comes back.
And it's not that much better on 9.04.

[Bug 182473] Re: rtl8187 drops connection

2009-01-14 Thread HW71
I just tried the steps provided by Saul D. B. and gave the
compat-wireless-2009-01-12 a try together with my built-in RTL8187B USB module.
Compilation on Ubuntu 8.10 was possible without any problems and installation
of the new drivers as described went fine.

- at least wicd doesn't hang any more (see issue (3) in my previous comment
posted on 2008-12-23)
- signal quality seems to be better than with the original driver, but I will
have to do some additional hours of testing in order to see, how things work
out...

For now many thanks for the hint!

[Bug 182473] Re: rtl8187 drops connection

2009-01-11 Thread xrgtn
2 Vit Svarc: thanks for HowTo

my 2c worth:
1. you don't need to do make as root (you only need root access for make
install)
2. with CONFIG_IEEE80211_DEBUG=y the ieee80211_rx.c won't compile

P.S. with linux 2.6.27-grsec (2.6.27.10) rtl8187 driver, I had Link
Quality 13 through 16, Signal level:65/65 and frequent connection drops
(under load), while atheros and intel WiFi cards reported Link Quality
about 90/100 and worked OK. Under light load (pair of ssh sessions) the
official rtl WiFi worked seemingly OK.

P.P.S. compiled and installed r8187: it finds many more available APs
than rtl8187 did, almost the same number as Atheros device. The big
problem is that r8187 does not support WPA, so I cannot use it at all.
I'll better return to rtl8187.

[Bug 182473] Re: rtl8187 drops connection

2009-01-10 Thread Saul D. B.
For those who don't mind recompiling kernel modules, an easy way to fix
this is to build and install the compat-wireless package.

It's a backport of the latest drivers in kernel GIT. that will install
in the /lib/your-kernel-version/updates/ directory, so that you can keep
the drivers built into the kernel should you need to uninstall compat-
wireless.

(WARNING: These drivers are untested. They may not even compile, and
could have bugs. Be aware that the Ubuntu Foundation, the people at
linuxwireless.org, and myself are not responsible for any damage to your
hardware, operating system, or personal health)

Instructions for those that need them:
1. ) sudo apt-get install linux-headers-$(uname -r)
2. ) Go to
http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Download#Directlydownloadingthetarball and
download the tarball.
3. ) Untar the archive, open a terminal and navigate to the extracted directory.
4. ) Do the following:
   $ make
   $ sudo make install
5. ) Reboot. Or you can do:
$ sudo make unload sudo make load

Just use $ sudo make uninstall to get rid of them and revert to the old
drivers.

[Bug 182473] Re: rtl8187 drops connection

2008-12-22 Thread HW71
Several problems exist even using the new kernel 2.6.27 of Ubuntu 8.10
together with a new Toshiba Satellite L300-1CM Notebook and built-in
RTL8187B USB module:

1) performance of the Wifi-module
=
This seems to be extremely worse in comparison to three different notebooks
using Ubuntu 8.04 and OpenSUSE 10.3 together with WPA2 encryption. For the new
Toshiba Satellite notebook I even had to relocate the WLAN router (now only 6
meter distance!) in order to get a connection at all - and now all other 3
notebooks have full signal strength at the WLAN-router while the new Toshiba
Satellite notebook has the weakest incoming signal at the WLAN router.

Though I know that this issue could be a mechanical / construction
problem caused by the location of the WLAN module inside the Laptop I
also saw similar issues reported by other users having different
machines but the same WLAN module, so I guess that this could also be
driver-related.

2) drop of connection

Sometimes the connection gets lost without any hint what happend. If this
problem occurs wicd still shows that the WLAN connection is up, but it's
neither possible to ping the router nor to open any page in the browser. The
only possibility for me to get things up and running ist to disconnect using
wicd and to reconnect to my WLAN

3) hang of wicd
==
Just as a side-note: as mentioned above I use wicd as network-manager
replacement. While disconnecting and reconnecting to my WLAN wicd seems to
freeze / hang or call it whatever you want. In fact wicd manages it to finally
perform all tasks, but it looks weird since even Gnome sometimes wants to tell
me, that wicd is not responding and asks, if I would like to terminate wicd. If
I cancel this question and wait some more seconds wicd finishes the action and
everything is fine again.

If requested I can provide additional stuff later on when I'm back at
home (logfiles or anything else that might be helpful).

[Bug 182473] Re: rtl8187 drops connection

2008-12-21 Thread ChrisLees
@Ignorant: As far as I can tell it is linked to uploads, not downloads.
When uploading to a local network, the speeds are very low and the
connection is likely to drop out. When playing Nexuiz online, I get the
Stopped Clock of Death (that indicates a connection loss). This
explains why your bittorrent and P2P can cause the problem, but your FTP
downloads do not.

2008-12-10 Thread ignorant
Hi all, I'm also experiencing a variation of this bug. My motherboard is
Asus M2N DH with integrated RTL8187 USB module. The difference is I ONLY
observe disconnection when I run p2p clients. At first I thought it had
something to do with bittorrent, but recently I tried other programs
like Amule and DC++ and I got exactly the same behaviour: Disconnection
after a random amount of time, independently of number of connections /
donwload/upload speed. Downloading via FTP, rapidshare etc. never kills
the connection, in fact I get nearly maximum speeds. I'm running Ubuntu
8.10 with kernel 2.6.27-9. If any logged information is needed, I'd be
happy to provide it.
