Please don't change the Status unless you know what you are doing.
Any update on this? The bug watch points to nothing now, maybe a website change
or something, but I searched and couldn't find the reported upstream bug report.

...I have Installed Ubuntu hardy Heron on my compaq c700 presario Laptop
as a virtual machine ...

If you installed it as a virtual machine, the physical hardware has
nothing to do with the virtual hardware, as seen from the guest
operating system.

I think that your problem is not related at all with the topic of this
thread.

For those unaware [and have no other reason for 'linux restricted

2009-02-20 Thread joshua.solidum
Hi Ubuntu Team your reading this mail all the way from South East Asia Phil..I
decided to post this questions here because there is no Linux/Ubuntu community
here in my location(Phil. Mindanao).
I have Installed Ubuntu hardy Heron on my compaq c700 presario Laptop as a
virtual machine Operating system which enables me to run windows vista starter
and Ubuntu hardy heron at the same time,It works but Im having alot of issues
with it:
1.Wireless connection is not working!?I have the option to add a wireless
networks but Im not finding any network at all.
2.Every Time I launch the Ubuntu hardy as a virtual machine Im getting a High
I/O in my harddrive!

And would there be any website, community forums and computer group in the
Phil.
in Mindanao region that I can link with? It seems that Im the only one using
Ubuntu in my neigborhood!? and if this system would crash I need perhaps some
guidance with it any links or online manual that I can get from the net?
Im new with the system.

The specs of the laptops are

1.5 ram
80 gb harddrive
celeron r processor
wifi adapter atheros(which I think may not support ubuntu not unless theres a
driver for it?)

Work fine in jaunty fresh install.

Are you sure?

On what model?

I tested on EeePC 701 Jaunty alfa 4 (may be it was alfa 3???) and I was not
able to make the wireless working.
I did not install it, I just run it from a live-usb.

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 182489 ***
   https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/182489

I think ath5k is blacklisted in Intrepid so as not to interfere with the
venerable madwifi which does not support atheros 5007 with the hal
ubuntu shipped.

The better work around for atheros 5007 based wireless cards in intrepid
is to install the linux-backports-modules-intrepid-generic module

The intrepid release notes [ located here
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/IntrepidReleaseNotes ] have the workaround which
I have copy pasted for your benefit.

Atheros ath5k wireless driver not enabled by default

The version of the ath5k driver for Atheros wireless devices included in
Linux 2.6.27 interferes with the use of the madwifi driver for some
wireless devices and as a result has been disabled by default. Many
Atheros chipsets will work correctly with the madwifi driver, but some
newer chipsets may not, and the madwifi driver may not work with WPA
authentication. If you have an Atheros device that does not work with
madwifi, you will want to install the linux-backports-modules-intrepid-
generic package, which includes an updated version of the ath5k driver.
While not installed by default, this linux-backports-modules-intrepid-
generic package is included on the Ubuntu 8.10 CD and DVD images for
ease of installation.

Tim,

should I understand from your latest comment that there are no plans to
try to backport a fix here to lrm-2.6.24, and we should mark this

2008-12-23 Thread sebass
Hi, I will try that, the only thing is that I installed Intrepid since it
has a better 3g usb modeminterface, with Hardy I couldn't connect to
internet with that kind of modem.
(there is also a bug there with the dns server addresses, that doesn't allow
you to
surf the web, each time it uses 11.12.13.14 instead of the one you choose,
so I can't
connect either, wireless at work only (via atheros with hardy))
Thank you and happy hollidays!!

[Bug 182489] Re: Atheros wireless (AR5007) not working on various laptops, including the ASUS Eee PC

2008-12-22 Thread sebass
HI to all!
I had been working around this issue since October 2007, including several
distributions and I still, I found the same solutions.
I have an aspire 7520, and I spent a LOT of time trying with madwifi,
ndiswrapper, acer_wmi, you name it, and after 6 months, I got my atheros AR
5007 working on hardy. (I followed all the procedures, installing ndiswrapper,
blacklisting, installing acer_wmi, dmesg, ..etc). bad, very bad
When Ibex came, I tried it, and I had more problems (out of the box) than on
hardy, but more important, that still, no wifi.
This time, ndiswrapper doesn't work, and I won''t try using also the acer_wmi
stuff.
So, I will like to know the real status of this issue, at least what options do
I have at the moment, if I try again the amd64 dist or the 32bit.
If madwifi will work on 64bits or keep trying on ndiswrapper.
This is so frustrating that I had been using Vista since October (Ibex release
time).
Thanks in advance.
Best Regards!!!
Sebass

If the Hardy madwifi driver in linux-restricted-modules doesn't work for
you, then try the DKMS madwifi package in the PPA

upgrade to Intrepid for better Atheros 5K support.

with Ubuntu the wireless doesn-t work.

I have tried the backports packages but they didn't work neither on

I have tried the fork Ubuntu-eee and the wireless works.

I wonder if there is a package for the Ubuntu mainstream distro which
just wraps the Ubuntu-eee fix for this bug with Atheron

2008-11-26 Thread Pelládi Gábor
Giacomo, I suppose your eee pc doesn't contain an Atheros wifi card,
like mine. It can contain an other wifi card. You can verify that with
the lspci command. If that doesn't give you something named Atheros,
you don't have an Atheros card. My eee contains a RaLink card, which
needs the rt2860sta driver. That driver is not included in Ubuntu yet,
even in backports, but it is included in Ubuntu-eee. See
https://bugs.launchpad.net/linux/+bug/210725 for more info on the RaLink
driver.

2008-11-19 Thread Andy Figueroa
Update on above:

Reinstalled Xubuntu Intrepid on the emachine D620. With a wired
connection I added the backports and after a reboot all I had to do was
setup my wireless connection with the Network Manager. Speed is
approximately the same as with the wired port.

dmesg identifies the chip as follows: Atheros AR2425 chip found (MAC:
0xe2, PHY: 0x70)

As a side note, neither Mint nor Sidux could successfully configure the
wireless NIC with ndiswrapper and the driver that came with the
computer. (no wireless extensions after setup).

[Bug 182489] Re: Atheros wireless (AR5007) not working on various laptops, including the ASUS Eee PC

2008-11-18 Thread Andy Figueroa
I have the new emachines D620 (very Linux compatible!) with:
05:00.0 Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR242x 802.11abg
Wireless PCI Express Adapter (rev 01)

Running Linux Mint (Elyssa 5-r1 fully updated w/Mint Update) I got the
wireless card running very well with ath5k by upgrading the Kernel to
vmlinuz-2.6.24-21-generic and adding the backports (also restricted-
modules and ubuntu-modules for good measure).

Then all I had to do was disable the two madwifi modules in restricted
drivers (Administration/Hardware Drivers), reboot, then and enable the
new Atheros 5xxx module after (may have been enabled by default).

I did this twice because I hosed the installation while screwing around
with Gentoo, so it is repeatable.

No joy at all with Intrepid. Also no joy with Gentoo in the latest
unstable kernel 2.6.27-gentoo-r2 and ath5k (won't associate). (I will
get this working - in time!)

I did get the wifi working using ath5k easily with Sidux (now fully
dist-upgraded) but performance is terrible.

Many thanks - this works (EeePC 900). There were two slight problems -
you have to remove the quote marks and re-type them if you cut and
paste and the WiFi was turned off in the bios during this process and
had to be turned on again. It now works fine.

process.
Thanks much again!.

Re-install has worked on every kernel, including latest .21-generic.
BUT, I do not need/install Windows Driver envelope [Ndiswrapper?]. Is
that where other problems lie?

I have the madwifi folder. To re-install on new kernel:
* Disable HAL and 802.11 device. ...System-Admin-Hardware Drivers...
* sudo apt-get update sudo aptitude install build-essential
make clean
make
sudo make install
sudo modprobe ath_pci
sudo modprobe wlan-scan-sta
* re-enable HAL and 802.11.
* restart

Hope this helps!

[Bug 182489] Re: Atheros wireless (AR5007) not working on various laptops, including the ASUS Eee PC

2008-10-21 Thread Nick Ward
I used the following method to get my eee pc wireless to work:
   Re: EeePC, wireless and Intrepid
with intrepid it should work almost out of the box. You just:

  -install intrepid
  -then go to system-hardware drivers
-disable the atheros driver in that list
  -reboot your computer

and wireless should work on the eeepc.

One problem that had me stumped initially was that it did not detect
channels 12 (2.467GHz) and 13 (2.472GHz).

[Bug 182489] Re: Atheros wireless (AR5007) not working on various laptops, including the ASUS Eee PC

2008-10-20 Thread Marcus
I followed the advice given in Bug 251252 given by Luks911 which
restored the wireless connectivity. See below:

I am experiencing the same problem after upgrading to kernel 2.6.24-21
this morning. I posted a question (48094) seeking a solution for this
issue. It has never happened in previous upgrades. Below is a copy of my
question:

When I ran update manager this morning (10-15-08) my system upgraded to
the kernel 2.6.24-21. Upon reboot my athi wifi card was no longer
working so I reinstalled the madwifi files rebooted again. When the
system rebooted it stoped just short of the end on the status bar the
Caps Lock key light began to flash.

FYI-I am able to boot up using an earlier kernel (2.6.24-19) so this
problem appears to be related to the kernel upgrade. This problem is
also described in Bug 251252 but I saw no resolution as this is a new
one problem due to the recent upgrade.

I am running 8.04 on a Compaq Presario 700 notebook.

Below are the steps outputs (where indicated):

- Ran Update Mananger
- Rebooted into the latest kernel (2.6.24-21)
- Repaired athi card access using the following steps:
  - cd madwifi-ng-r2756+ar5007
  - make
  - sudo make install
  - sudo modprobe ath_pci
  - sudo reboot
- This is where the system locked up during the reboot process where the Caps
Lock light began to flash. The mouse pad light also goes from inactive to
active. The system hangs in this mode indefinitely.

- Rebooted into 2.6.24-21-generic (recovery mode)
- Ran repair package option (dpkg)
- Rebooted and experienced the same problem
- Rebooted again into the 2.6.24-21-generic (recovery mode) to see what errors
were occurring. Got the following message: kernel panic - not syncing fatal
exception in intrupt

Is there a way to fix this issue or is a patch required? Thanks in
advance for any help given in resolving this issue!

Marcus,br
I read the same problem in Ubuntu-es forum, with that kernel update in Hardy
and a Compaq Presario F700 (with Atheros AR5007EG).br
The aparently solution is:br
- Boot in recovery into kernel 2.6.24-21-genericbr
- Uninstall de madwifi driver with:br
nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;- cd madwifi_directory (madwifi-wbrng-r2756+wbrar5007 or
another version, like madwifi-wbrhal-0.10.wbr5.6)br
nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;- sudo make uninstallbr
- Then install de linux-backportswbr-modules for your kernel version. With
this package you can use the wifi using the ath5k driver: runbr
- sudo modprobe ath5kbr
if it's necesary.

I did the above which returned the wireless feature however when I try
to connect via the wireless Internet programs such as Firefox act like
the computer is not on-line. In my troubleshooting I noticed that the
Atheros Hardware Access Layer device in hardware drivers is unchecked.
Do I need to activate this?

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

problem with the madwifi driver taking precedence still exists, so if

I agree, you cannot be marking this bug as fix-released until it works
out of the box. If I wanted to use the Ubuntu live-cd for some computer
maintenance which required wireless internet access, I could not
currently do that because it requires a blacklist ath_pci which
requires a restart, thus making it impossible to do with a live-cd.
Please wait to close or otherwise say that this bug is fixed until it
works out of the box on all machines.

2008-10-05 Thread Daniel Miles
I'm changing this back to in progress. The bug is that the AR5007
chipset does not work, and that is still the default behaviour on a
fresh install. While a simple tweak is available to remedy this, the
user is not notified of this in any way. As such, the bug is still
present until a) the correct driver is loaded instead of ath_pci, or b)
on detecting that chipset, the user is displayed a dialog telling them
the tweak they must do - obviously not an ideal solution, but enough to
close the bug.

Apologies to double post. Styyle14, you should be able to rmmod /
modprobe to the correct driver with the live CD, unless I'm mistaken on
that... The issue isn't the live CD so much as that it still does not
function out of the box, so that a user who installs Ubuntu will just
assume it does not work.

2008-10-05 Thread Krinn
The problem here is that the pci id 168c:001c is listed as an alias for
ath_hal. This causes ath_hal to be loaded instead of ath5k. If ath_hal
does not support this device, then this pci id must be removed from
modules.alias.override/ath_hal

Fixing this should make things work out of the box with Intrepid.

[Bug 182489] Re: Atheros wireless (AR5007) not working on various laptops, including the ASUS Eee PC

2008-09-21 Thread Albert Ulmer
I just installed the current intrepid-desktop-i386 on my Asus Eee 900.
To enable wireless, I had to comment blacklist ath5k and uncomment
blacklist ath_pci in /etc/modprobe.d/madwifi and reboot.

So far, I couldn't notice any wireless slowdowns compared to other
operating systems.

2008-09-18 Thread captive
Yes signal is (maybe) 10% weaker, but the worst thing is that bandwith seems to
be narrowed to 20KBytes/s!
I can download at 1MByte/s using ethernet, and almost at the same speed using
another kernel with madwifi ath_pci compiled on it. If I use 2.6.27-3 with
ath5k I start with 150-200 KB/s but in a few seconds it slows down to 20-25KB/s.
This was tested downloading from different sources, upgrading system, etc..
It doesn't look like there is packet loss.

I didn't try blacklisting ath_pci, I just tried to rmmod every ath* module,
then modprobing ath_pci.
I did the same for ath5k, with no luck.
Anyway I'll give a try to see if blacklisting ath_pci works.

It seems there's a regression in 2.6.27-3: module ath5k is loaded but no wifi
interface is available. Even Jockey shows that module is in use.
This is tested on an Acer AspireOne (it should be an AR5007).
Who is on 2.6.27-2 on this hardware reported wifi is working on that kernel,
so if you have everything else working DON'T upgrade to -3

I believe you have to blacklist ath_pci first, then reboot.

Both ath_pci and ath5k are being auto-loaded on bootup because both
modules are matching the AR5007 vendor/device IDs.

2008-09-13 Thread Lex Ross
Hi Tim, and thank you so much for the update. I have compiled modules on
Hardy using your GIT repository, and it worked just fine on my Asus F5N
laptop. The only thing I had to do is to manually specify the country
code for ath_pci kernel module:

# modprobe -r ath_pci
# modprobe ath_pci countrycode=643

During the boot process however the country code option is not passed to
ath_pci module, and it fails with the message

Sep 13 14:35:35 mars kernel: [ 373.541177] MadWifi: ath_getchannels:
Unable to collect channel list from HAL; regdomain likely 96 country
code 0

32-bit Gutsy with madwifi patch on the other hand had no such issues
(see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LaptopTestingTeam/AsusF5N wiki page for
details)

Any ideas?

For Hardy support, could some of you guys try installing a DKMS package
from my PPA at http://ppa.launchpad.net/timg-tpi/ubuntu ? There is a
madwifi DKMS package there that is based on the madwifi-hal-2008-08-15

at git://kernel.ubuntu.com/rtg/madwifi-hal-2008-08-15 and just install
the compiled modules (for those of you with Eee PC).

Also tested Intrepid alfa 5 on Eee PC 701, 512MB / 4GB

Wireless still does not work out of the box, but with a minimal change
it does.

Just blacklist the ath_pci module and reboot. Wireless will be working
with no problem.

To blacklist the module:

$ sudo vi /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist

Then, add this line to the file:

blacklist ath_pci
