Hi Ubuntu Team your reading this mail all the way from South East Asia Phil..I decided to post this questions here because there is no Linux/Ubuntu community here in my location(Phil. Mindanao). I have Installed Ubuntu hardy Heron on my compaq c700 presario Laptop as a virtual machine Operating system which enables me to run windows vista starter and Ubuntu hardy heron at the same time,It works but Im having alot of issues with it: 1.Wireless connection is not working!?I have the option to add a wireless networks but Im not finding any network at all. 2.Every Time I launch the Ubuntu hardy as a virtual machine Im getting a High I/O in my harddrive! And would there be any website, community forums and computer group in the Phil. in Mindanao region that I can link with? It seems that Im the only one using Ubuntu in my neigborhood!? and if this system would crash I need perhaps some guidance with it any links or online manual that I can get from the net? Cheers *** This bug is a duplicate of bug 182489 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/182489 I think ath5k is blacklisted in Intrepid so as not to interfere with the venerable madwifi which does not support atheros 5007 with the hal ubuntu shipped. The better work around for atheros 5007 based wireless cards in intrepid is to install the linux-backports-modules-intrepid-generic module The intrepid release notes [ located here https://wiki.ubuntu.com/IntrepidReleaseNotes ] have the workaround which I have copy pasted for your benefit. Atheros ath5k wireless driver not enabled by default The version of the ath5k driver for Atheros wireless devices included in Linux 2.6.27 interferes with the use of the madwifi driver for some wireless devices and as a result has been disabled by default. Many Atheros chipsets will work correctly with the madwifi driver, but some newer chipsets may not, and the madwifi driver may not work with WPA authentication. If you have an Atheros device that does not work with madwifi, you will want to install the linux-backports-modules-intrepid- generic package, which includes an updated version of the ath5k driver. While not installed by default, this linux-backports-modules-intrepid- generic package is included on the Ubuntu 8.10 CD and DVD images for ease of installation. ** This bug has been marked a duplicate of bug 182489 Atheros wireless (AR5007) not working on various laptops, including the ASUS Eee PC -- atheros 5007eg Intrepid update https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/307933 You received this bug notification because you are a direct subscriber of the bug (via bug 182489). [Bug 182489] Re: Atheros wireless (AR5007) not working on various laptops, including the ASUS Eee PC
HI to all! I had been working around this issue since October 2007, including several distributions and I still, I found the same solutions. I have an aspire 7520, and I spent a LOT of time trying with madwifi, ndiswrapper, acer_wmi, you name it, and after 6 months, I got my atheros AR 5007 working on hardy. (I followed all the procedures, installing ndiswrapper, blacklisting, installing acer_wmi, dmesg, ..etc). bad, very bad When Ibex came, I tried it, and I had more problems (out of the box) than on hardy, but more important, that still, no wifi. This time, ndiswrapper doesn't work, and I won''t try using also the acer_wmi stuff. So, I will like to know the real status of this issue, at least what options do I have at the moment, if I try again the amd64 dist or the 32bit. If madwifi will work on 64bits or keep trying on ndiswrapper. This is so frustrating that I had been using Vista since October (Ibex release time). Thanks in advance. Best Regards!!! Giacomo, I suppose your eee pc doesn't contain an Atheros wifi card, like mine. It can contain an other wifi card. You can verify that with the lspci command. If that doesn't give you something named Atheros, you don't have an Atheros card. My eee contains a RaLink card, which needs the rt2860sta driver. I have the new emachines D620 (very Linux compatible!) with: 05:00.0 Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR242x 802.11abg Wireless PCI Express Adapter (rev 01) Running Linux Mint (Elyssa 5-r1 fully updated w/Mint Update) I got the wireless card running very well with ath5k by upgrading the Kernel to vmlinuz-2.6.24-21-generic and adding the backports (also restricted- modules and ubuntu-modules for good measure). Then all I had to do was disable the two madwifi modules in restricted drivers (Administration/Hardware Drivers), reboot, then and enable the new Atheros 5xxx module after (may have been enabled by default). I did this twice because I hosed the installation while screwing around with Gentoo, so it is repeatable. No joy at all with Intrepid. Also no joy with Gentoo in the latest unstable kernel 2.6.27-gentoo-r2 and ath5k (won't associate). (I will get this working - in time!) I did get the wifi working using ath5k easily with Sidux (now fully dist-upgraded) but performance is terrible. -- Atheros wireless (AR5007) not working on various laptops, including the ASUS Eee PC https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/182489 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 182489] Re: Atheros wireless (AR5007) not working on various laptops, including the ASUS Eee PC
I followed the advice given in Bug 251252 given by Luks911 which restored the wireless connectivity. See below: I am experiencing the same problem after upgrading to kernel 2.6.24-21 this morning. I posted a question (48094) seeking a solution for this issue. It has never happened in previous upgrades. Below is a copy of my question: When I ran update manager this morning (10-15-08) my system upgraded to the kernel 2.6.24-21. Upon reboot my athi wifi card was no longer working so I reinstalled the madwifi files rebooted again. When the system rebooted it stoped just short of the end on the status bar the Caps Lock key light began to flash. FYI-I am able to boot up using an earlier kernel (2.6.24-19) so this problem appears to be related to the kernel upgrade. This problem is also described in Bug 251252 but I saw no resolution as this is a new one problem due to the recent upgrade. I am running 8.04 on a Compaq Presario 700 notebook. Below are the steps outputs (where indicated): - Ran Update Mananger - Rebooted into the latest kernel (2.6.24-21) - Repaired athi card access using the following steps: - cd madwifi-ng-r2756+ar5007 - make - sudo make install - sudo modprobe ath_pci - sudo reboot - This is where the system locked up during the reboot process where the Caps Lock light began to flash. The mouse pad light also goes from inactive to active. The system hangs in this mode indefinitely. - Rebooted into 2.6.24-21-generic (recovery mode) - Ran repair package option (dpkg) - Rebooted and experienced the same problem - Rebooted again into the 2.6.24-21-generic (recovery mode) to see what errors were occurring. Got the following message: kernel panic - not syncing fatal exception in intrupt Is there a way to fix this issue or is a patch required? Thanks in advance for any help given in resolving this issue! Marcus,br I read the same problem in Ubuntu-es forum, with that kernel update in Hardy and a Compaq Presario F700 (with Atheros AR5007EG).br The aparently solution is:br - Boot in recovery into kernel 2.6.24-21-genericbr - Uninstall de madwifi driver with:br nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;- cd madwifi_directory (madwifi-wbrng-r2756+wbrar5007 or another version, like madwifi-wbrhal-0.10.wbr5.6)br nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;- sudo make uninstallbr - Then install de linux-backportswbr-modules for your kernel version. With this package you can use the wifi using the ath5k driver: runbr - sudo modprobe ath5kbr if it's necesary. I did the above which returned the wireless feature however when I try to connect via the wireless Internet programs such as Firefox act like the computer is not on-line. In my troubleshooting I noticed that the Atheros Hardware Access Layer device in hardware drivers is unchecked. Do I need to activate this? [Bug 182489] Re: Atheros wireless (AR5007) not working on various laptops, including the ASUS Eee PC
I'm changing this back to in progress. The bug is that the AR5007 chipset does not work, and that is still the default behaviour on a fresh install. While a simple tweak is available to remedy this, the user is not notified of this in any way. As such, the bug is still present until a) the correct driver is loaded instead of ath_pci, or b) on detecting that chipset, the user is displayed a dialog telling them the tweak they must do - obviously not an ideal solution, but enough to close the bug. ** Changed in: linux-restricted-modules-2.6.24 (Ubuntu Intrepid) Status: Fix Released = In Progress -- Atheros wireless (AR5007) not working on various laptops, including the ASUS Eee PC https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/182489 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

The problem here is that the pci id 168c:001c is listed as an alias for ath_hal. This causes ath_hal to be loaded instead of ath5k. [Bug 182489] Re: Atheros wireless (AR5007) not working on various laptops, including the ASUS Eee PC
I am an avid Ubuntu user and promoter, however my new laptop is having extreme problems recognizing my Atheros chipset 5007EG on a Toshiba Satellite m305d-s4831. I have spent hours with madwifi and ndiswrapper trying to get the packages to work however both my ethernet and wireless are not working even though they are being recognized by the hardware manager. It is making it an incredible headache to try to find all the packages one by one i need to get this working. Please help get a fix for this. The kubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Alpha 4 Test's LAN is working great, however right now i can't access package manager or restricted drivers until the release, so I don't know if the bug is fixed yet. Please help. Oh, and the entire campus here is soon to be making the transition over to linux from windows. Hey Garret, Latest news on that is that Intrepid will have Kernel version 2.6.27 in it which will include the newest solution for people like you and me. For now go here to get it to work: http://madberry.org/2008/08/how-to-get-atheros-ar242x-wireless-to- work-2/ When Intrepid gets into beta I will start testing myself -- [mad]Berry van der Linden madberry.org blackdeath.nl On Thursday 28 August 2008 02:20:00 garrett.todd wrote: I am an avid Ubuntu user and promoter, however my new laptop is having extreme problems recognizing my Atheros chipset 5007EG on a Toshiba Satellite m305d-s4831. A quick search shows that you are correct. I'm sorry for spreading mis-information. It would be great to backport ath5k from .27, in l-b-m if need be.
