I got gitk to not crash by installing unifont package. E.g. sudo apt install unifont the font isn't displayed in gitk properly (shows up as an empty square) but at least gitk no longer crashes - Details of System VERSION="20.04.1 LTS (Focal Fossa)" $ dpkg --list gitk
