Excellent! (It's not in focal-proposed any longer, though, it's in

That's great. My remark was not so seriously meant - suppose that the
upstream MATE devs don't see this bug report anyway.

@Gunnar: I believe that we have temporarily solved the problem. That is,
we did everything in our power to give MATE developers time to fix this
bug, and also released a temporary fix for users. I will try to keep
track of the situation by installing libmatekbd from Github.

I see. That means that it may be worth a new try in the end of next week
to copy the latest versions of language-pack-uk and language-pack-gnome-

anyway, and I think it's easy for Łukasz to copy them to -proposed. (
Hope I'm right

Yes, Two messages were shortened even more and Maxim confirmed that the
new version (now merged into LP translations) works for him without
crashing.

In fact, this bug has been around for a long time, but I was the first to tell
MATE developers about this problem.
But at the same time, MATE is currently the most accessible desktop environment
for blind users. This bug frightened users because it prevented them from

Sorry for your time. Yes, you are right (e.g. no crashes in the keyboard

So there is still something in xkeyboard-config.mo which triggers a MATE
crash...
I compared the PO file on github with the one at LP, and there are
differences. Most importantly the file at github is based on a
translation template for xkeyboard-config 2.28 while we have 2.29 in
Ubuntu 20.04.
@bmivzkrp Sorry, I fixed the file according to the recommendations (and
double checked this today). There is something wrong with your setup or
MATE itself. Nothing we can do here.

sudo apt install language-pack-uk language-pack-gnome-uk

Let me try to clarify:
The updated packages are in focal-proposed. To install them properly, do
the following:
* Open Software & Updates, select the "Developer Options" tab, and
enable "Pre-released updates".
* Run these commands:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install language-pack-uk
@Gunnar: Thank you very much for your clarification. So far, only
language-pack-uk-base has been updated, but everything remained as it
was.

@Maksym: It may seem a bit confusing. Actually it belongs to both
language-pack-uk-base and language-pack-uk. But the latter is the one
which includes the most recent version of xkeyboard-config.mo, and it
will brutally overwrite the old version.

everything correctly.
Focal-Proposed updates should include language-pack-uk and

Yes, I will update the delta language pack for the Ukrainian language. I
want to test if the cronjobs are working so I'll do that tomorrow, after
(hopefully) the first batch of updated langpacks get auto-uploaded into
the PPA. I'll keep you updated.
