I thought I might have to get into Grub to select mainline kernel (do I?), but either way right now the machine boots up fine with the DVD drive in. Although when booting I get the messages shown in the attached screenshot about 'bootconfig' being found on the command line, but no bootconfig

It sounds like a hardware fault. I'm not sure what else to recommend other than: * Don't ever plug the drive in; or * Get a new drive; or * Get a new motherboard; or * Try a newer or older kernel version and see if there are any that work:
