Unfortunately, that was the only crash report I got after my issue
happened again.

That crash is not relevant to this bug. It is bug 1811023.

[Bug 2109886] Re: System sometimes logs into X11 instead of Wayland

2025-05-05 Thread Nico Heister
My system is AMD-only, so I haven't installed any custom graphics
packages or drivers.

I've only installed ubuntu-restricted-extras after installation, and I'm
also using input-remapper, to remap some of my mouse buttons.

Is there anything I can do to help you with debugging this issue further?
Are there any more logs/information I could provide?

By the way:
Thank you so much for taking your time in helping me out with my issue.
I really appreciate it!

Yes https://errors.ubuntu.com/oops/8c0c45ce-298a-11f0-a6b5-fa163ec8ca8c
looks like the same kind of crash but it's missing a stack trace.

I've been trying to guess what binaries might be using those vector
(AVX) instructions but I can't find a match yet. Have you installed any
custom graphics packages or drivers?

[Bug 2109886] Re: System sometimes logs into X11 instead of Wayland

2025-05-05 Thread Nico Heister
Thank you!

That's interesting:

When I was deleting the extensions folder from ~/.local/share/gnome-shell/, my
problem still occurred.
But now I've removed ArcMenu using the Extension Manager GUI, and so far, the
fallback to X11 has stopped.

However, I'm still getting new .crash files in the form of
_usr_bin_gnome-shell.119.crash, even after deleting all existing files
in /var/crash/

I've uploaded the file using ubuntu-bug, here's the ID:
8c0c45ce-298a-11f0-a6b5-fa163ec8ca8c

[Bug 2109886] Re: System sometimes logs into X11 instead of Wayland

2025-05-04 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks. Only one of those crashes is relevant but it's unfortunately not
readable:

  https://errors.ubuntu.com/oops/68a4f1b2-28cf-11f0-a6af-fa163ec8ca8c

Interesting though, that it seems to be crashing in vector extensions.

Please delete all existing files in /var/crash/ and then report new
crashes as they occur.

P.S. The extension I could see was /home/nico/.local/share/gnome-
shell/extensions/[email protected] but that doesn't mean it's the only
one.

[Bug 2109886] Re: System sometimes logs into X11 instead of Wayland

2025-05-04 Thread Nico Heister
Quick update:

Removing the exensions folder from ~/.local/share/gnome-shell/ didn't fix my
issue.
I also found out that the issue now occurs on every boot (after powering it
down).

However, no new .crash files are being generated in: /var/crash
The only files that get updated on every boot in that folder are:
- kdump_lock
- kexec_cmd

2025-05-04 Thread Nico Heister
Got it, thank you for your explanation.

Here are the IDs:

b8c46de8-28d5-11f0-a6af-fa163ec8ca8c
68a4f1b2-28cf-11f0-a6af-fa163ec8ca8c

Could you also please tell me the name of the unsupported extension, so I can
investigate this further?
Since the fallback to X11 doesn't happen every time, it might be useful.

And what exactly do you mean by "unsupported"?
I'm just curious, because according to the Extensions Manager, all extensions
should be supported.

[Bug 2109886] Re: System sometimes logs into X11 instead of Wayland

2025-05-04 Thread Daniel van Vugt
It's /var/crash/_usr_bin_gnome-shell* that's more relevant here. If you
don't know the ID that got uploaded then it would be in the file
/var/crash/_usr_bin_gnome-shell.*.uploaded

Using 'sudo' is correct because the file is owned by a different user
ID. But if you don't get any useful feedback then:

1. Check for *.uploaded files which contain the crash ID.
2. Try using 'apport-cli' instead of 'ubuntu-bug'.

Also you seem to have at least one unsupported extension installed.
Please remove all such extensions:

  cd ~/.local/share/gnome-shell/
  rm -rf extensions

and then log in again. Does that avoid the problem?

[Bug 2109886] Re: System sometimes logs into X11 instead of Wayland

2025-05-04 Thread Nico Heister
Thank you for your reply, I appreciate it.

To answer your questions:

1. I've attached the two files for you.
2. I've found a .crash file that could be related to my issue:
- _usr_lib_xorg_Xorg.119.crash

It's from yesterday, before I submitted this bug report.

However, when using ubuntu-bug /var/crash/_usr_lib_xorg_Xorg.119.crash, it
gives me a "Permission denied" error. So I'm using sudo ubuntu-bug
/var/crash/_usr_lib_xorg_Xorg.119.crash instead. And while I do get the crash
report GUI using that command, and I'm able to send the crash report, I don't
get any ID. Am I missing something here?

3. Clicking on your link simply gives me the message "No errors have
been reported from this system", so I can't provide you with any
additional links, I'm afraid.

Is there anything else I can do to provide you with further information?

[Bug 2109886] Re: System sometimes logs into X11 instead of Wayland

2025-05-03 Thread Daniel van Vugt
An automatic fallback to X11 occurs if the Wayland session crashes
during startup. To help us find the cause of any potential crash, please
follow these steps:

1. Run these commands:
journalctl -b0 > journal.txt
journalctl -b-1 > prevjournal.txt
and attach the resulting text files here.

2. Look in /var/crash for crash files and if found run:
ubuntu-bug YOURFILE.crash
Then tell us the ID of the newly-created bug.

3. If step 2 failed then look at https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/ID where
ID is the content of file /var/lib/whoopsie/whoopsie-id on the machine.
Do you find any links to recent problems on that page? If so then please
send the links to us.

Please take care to avoid attaching .crash files to bugs as we are
unable to process them as file attachments. It would also be a security
risk for yourself.
