As gnome-open $url works fine, I conclude that whatever it is that handles .desktop files at fault. gnome-open test.desktop does not do anything, as there is no MIME handler for the type. Presumably, then, Nautilus is short-circuiting. So Nautilus is at fault, by my judgement. ** Changed in:
