[Bug 2161309] Re: Backlight regression

2026-09-29 Thread Mazen
Confirming fix on Acer Nitro AN515-57 (Intel TigerLake-H UHD Graphics, i915 +
NVIDIA RTX 3050 Ti hybrid).
Ubuntu 24.04, kernel 7.0.0-34-generic (linux-hwe-7.0).
6.17.0-40 worked, 7.0.0-2x/3x regressed.
Brightness keys work again on 7.0.0-34 and intel_backlight responds.
Suspend/resume: screen comes back on, brightness preserved (set to 50%,
suspended, resumed, still 50% via intel_backlight).

[Bug 2161309] Re: Backlight regression

2026-09-29 Thread Jose Navarro
I have tested the fix on my Dell Latitude 7490 running Ubuntu 24.04.

Hardware:

* Dell Latitude 7490
* Intel UHD Graphics 620

Kernel tested:

* 7.0.0-34-generic

Results:

* Brightness keys work correctly.
* GNOME brightness slider works correctly.
* The physical display brightness changes as expected.
* No `i915.enable_dpcd_backlight=0` kernel parameter is used.
* Suspend/resume works correctly, both when suspending from Ubuntu and using
the keyboard.
* Brightness continues to work correctly after resume.
* A full reboot also works correctly.

I can confirm that the backlight regression is fixed on my Dell Latitude
7490 with 7.0.0-34-generic.

Thank you for fixing this issue.

[Bug 2161309] Re: Backlight regression

2026-09-20 Thread Xan Eos
I mentioned it on bug# 2161359, but I'll say it here as well. No Kernel
since 7.0.0-14 has had the backlight, nor its respective keys, working
properly on an LG Gram, 7.0.0-31 doesn't either.

[Bug 2161309] Re: Backlight regression

2026-09-19 Thread Alessandro Armando
I tested kernel 7.0.0-31-generic (7.0.0-31.31) as requested, but the
problem persists on my Dell XPS 13 9340 with the Sharp C71M1 panel. The
brightness keys, the GNOME slider, and direct writes to
/sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness change the reported
brightness values, but the physical panel luminance remains unchanged.
Therefore, the fix for bug 2161309 does not resolve the issue on this
hardware configuration. Please reopen bug 2166520 or advise which
additional DRM/i915 diagnostics are required.

Re: [Bug 2161309] Re: Backlight regression

2026-09-16 Thread Ivan Poplavskii
I can confirm that the fix resolves the original backlight issue on my
hardware.

Verification details:
- Machine: HP Pavilion x360 Convertible 14-ba0xx
- GPU: Intel HD Graphics 610 [8086:5906]
- Ubuntu: 24.04 (Noble), amd64
- Running kernel: 7.0.0-31-generic
- Package version: 7.0.0-31.31~24.04.1

Brightness hotkeys and the GNOME brightness slider now change the
physical panel brightness normally. The original failure was
reproducible with 7.0.0-28-generic, where the software brightness
value changed but the physical backlight stayed dim.

No i915.enable_dpcd_backlight workaround is present on the current
kernel command line.

This verifies the Noble generic/HWE kernel fix for my duplicate report
#2163014. The linux-xuantie verification request does not apply to
this amd64 machine.

[Bug 2161309] Re: Backlight regression

2026-09-16 Thread Zukrin
I reported duplicate bug #2165156 (Haswell i915 resume/black screen
regression).

I can confirm that the proposed fix resolves the issue for my hardware.

### Verification Details:
- **Hardware / Machine:** ASUS N56JN laptop (Intel Haswell Core i7-4710HQ / HD
Graphics 4600)
- **Ubuntu Release:** Ubuntu 24.04
- **Tested Package / Kernel Version:** 7.0.0-31-generic from noble-proposed /
kernel parameter "quiet splash mem_sleep_default=deep acpi_osi=
acpi_backlight=native"

### Test Results:
- Prior behavior: Black screen / display failure upon resuming from S3 suspend
with `assert_can_disable_lcpll` warnings in dmesg.
- New behavior: Multiple S3 suspend/resume cycles executed successfully.
Display recovers immediately without black screen or driver stall.

[Bug 2161309] Re: Backlight regression

2026-09-16 Thread Ubuntu Kernel Bot
This bug is awaiting verification that the linux-xuantie/7.0.0-1006.6
kernel in -proposed solves the problem. Please test the kernel and
update this bug with the results. If the problem is solved, change the
tag 'verification-needed-resolute-linux-xuantie' to 'verification-done-
resolute-linux-xuantie'. If the problem still exists, change the tag
'verification-needed-resolute-linux-xuantie' to 'verification-failed-

If verification is not done by 5 working days from today, this fix will
be dropped from the source code, and this bug will be closed.

See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation how
to enable and use -proposed. Thank you!

[Bug 2161309] Re: Backlight regression

2026-08-27 Thread Boussard Jean-Marie
This fix works for me.

System: ASUS X302LA, Linux Mint 22.3 (based on Ubuntu 24.04 Noble)

Symptoms with kernel 7.0.0-28-generic:

Brightness keys had no effect
No backlight after resuming from suspend (black screen)

Workaround used prior to testing the fix: adding
i915.enable_dpcd_backlight=0 to the GRUB kernel command line restored
normal behavior.

Testing method: proposed pocket not enabled via apt/sources.list;
instead, manually downloaded and installed the following packages from
this bug's Launchpad page via dpkg:

linux-hwe-7.0-headers-7.0.0-31 (15 MB)
linux-headers-7.0.0-31-generic (4.0 MB)
linux-image-7.0.0-31-generic (16 MB)
linux-modules-7.0.0-31-generic (161 MB)

Result: Booted into kernel 7.0.0-31-generic without the
i915.enable_dpcd_backlight=0 workaround. Brightness keys work correctly
and backlight resumes normally after suspend. Re-tested kernel
7.0.0-28-generic (workaround removed) to confirm the regression is still
present there, ruling out any coincidence.

[Bug 2161309] Re: Backlight regression

2026-08-25 Thread Ubuntu Kernel Bot
This bug is awaiting verification that the linux-fips/7.0.0-31.31+fips1
kernel in -proposed solves the problem. Please test the kernel and
update this bug with the results. If the problem is solved, change the
tag 'verification-needed-resolute-linux-fips' to 'verification-done-
resolute-linux-fips'. If the problem still exists, change the tag
'verification-needed-resolute-linux-fips' to 'verification-failed-
resolute-linux-fips'.

If verification is not done by 5 working days from today, this fix will
be dropped from the source code, and this bug will be closed.

See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation how
to enable and use -proposed. Thank you!

[Bug 2161309] Re: Backlight regression

2026-08-24 Thread Violet Koss
I could not update to kernel version 7.0.0-31-generic, nor any other
kernel, due to errors, but adding the boot parameter
i915.enable_dpcd_backlight=0 did help without having to change the
kernel. I can confirm this helped resolve the issue of my laptop's
brightness not working and being dark after waking up from suspend.

Re: [Bug 2161309] Re: Backlight regression

2026-08-21 Thread Craig Denson
While I may have screwed up something , I think I'm running
7.0.0-31-generic and there is no difference, still stuck on max brightness:

$ hostnamectl
   Static hostname: Cirrus
   Icon name: computer-laptop
   Chassis: laptop 💻

  Operating System: Ubuntu 26.04 LTS
  Kernel: Linux 7.0.0-31-generic
  Architecture: x86-64
  Hardware Vendor: LG Electronics
  Hardware Model: 16Z90SP-A.ADB8U1
   Hardware SKU: EVO
  Hardware Version: 0.1
  Firmware Version: M2ZI0450 X64
  Firmware Date: Mon 2024-06-10
  Firmware Age: 2y 2mont

After installing 7.0.0-31-generic - it kept booting the
7.0.0-2018-nvidia-bos kernel. I removed it anyway with apt and killed my
machine. editing the grub boot parameters by hand seems to have worked,
but I trust nothing now.

audio down/up keys still work fine.

[Bug 2161309] Re: Backlight regression

2026-08-21 Thread Pavol
To fellow Ubuntu/Kubuntu users affected by this issue:

As mentioned above, this bug is resolved starting with kernel version
linux-image-7.0.0-31-generic.

This fix is currently available in the `-proposed` repository for
testing. Testing this pre-release build and providing your feedback here
is very important for Canonical and Ubuntu developers—it helps them
verify that the patch works reliably across different hardware
configurations before releasing it to everyone in standard updates (and
passing feedback upstream to the Linux kernel).

If you are a regular user and run into any difficulties during the
process, you can easily use modern AI tools (such as Gemini with
reasoning enabled). If something goes wrong, simply copy the terminal
output into the AI to analyze and guide you through the solution.

Here is a step-by-step guide to safely install ONLY the proposed kernel
without upgrading the rest of your system:

---

### Step 0: Check your system info (to include in your feedback comment)
Run:
hostnamectl

---

### Step 1: Enable the `-proposed` repository
Open your terminal (e.g., Konsole) and run:

SUITE=$(lsb_release -cs)
sudo add-apt-repository -y "deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/
${SUITE}-proposed main restricted"
sudo apt update

---

### Step 2: Install ONLY the new kernel from `-proposed`
(Do NOT run `sudo apt upgrade`, as that would pull other untested system
packages. Install only the kernel):

sudo apt install -t ${SUITE}-proposed linux-image-generic linux-headers-
generic

(APT will automatically download the `...-31-generic` kernel image and
all required modules).

---

### Step 3: Safely disable the `-proposed` repository
Once the installation finishes, remove the proposed archive to keep your system
stable:

sudo add-apt-repository -r -y "deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/
${SUITE}-proposed main restricted"
sudo apt update

---

### Step 4: Reboot and verify
1. Reboot your machine:
sudo reboot

2. After booting, verify that you are running kernel version 31:
uname -r

---

If your brightness controls and suspend/resume are now working properly,
please leave a comment with your hardware model (from `hostnamectl`) to
confirm verification!

[Bug 2161309] Re: Backlight regression

2026-08-21 Thread Pavol
Hi guys,

I have tested the proposed kernel on my system and can confirm that the
regression is fixed.

Hardware & System Details:
- Device: Dell Precision M4800
- OS: Ubuntu 26.04 LTS
- Graphics: Hybrid / Dual GPU (Intel HD Graphics + NVIDIA Quadro K1100M on
nouveau)
- Tested Kernel Version: linux-image-7.0.0-31-generic (7.0.0-31.31) from
-proposed

Test Results:
1. Backlight / Brightness Regulation: Works properly via Fn keyboard shortcuts
as well as the GUI slider.
2. Suspend & Resume: The black screen issue is completely resolved. Upon waking
from suspend, the screen backlight turns back on immediately.

Thank you for fixing this issue!

PS, Just as an aside note:
AI was very helpful - guide how to install linux-image-7.0.0-31-generic

2026-08-18 Thread Istvan Nagy
Dear All,

Tested 7.0.0-1018-nvidia on a ThinkPad X250.

Kernel Linux Thinkpad-X250 7.0.0-1018-nvidia #18-Ubuntu SMP
PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Wed Aug 12 05:40:06 UTC 2026 x86_64 GNU/Linux

The lid close/open graphics resume issue is fixed. I tested three lid
close/open cycles and the graphical session resumed correctly every time.

Bests,

Istvan

Hello,

I've been on my 2 week holidays and I'm back now :) Good news is, patch
has been applied while I was away and should probably land in 7.0.0-31

fixed your backlight controls problem once it is available. Thanks for

[Bug 2161309] Re: Backlight regression

2026-08-05 Thread John Smith
So I just checked by completely removing nvidia drivers,
i.e.
sudo apt purge nvidia-*

then booting into latest available kernel, which at the time of this comment
was,
Linux 7.0.0-29-generic (on (K)Ubuntu 26.04),

the problem persists in:
7.0.0-28-generic, and
7.0.0-29-generic

After reinstalling the proprietary drivers 580, and booting into
7.0.0-27-generic,
the drivers are inactive but the brightness problem doesn't exist.

Problems being:
1.) No brightness control when the display is working
2.) After resume from suspend, the backlight of the inbuilt display does-not
switch-on.

2026-08-04 Thread John Smith
I don't know if it's the same bug, but, the backlight doesn't turn on after
resume from suspend,
and,
brightness controls do-not work when the display is on (i.e. before
suspend-resume cycle).

Last good version: 7.0.0-27-generic
Problem kernels: 7.0.0-28-generic, 7.0.0-29-generic (as TESTED on both)

I have a dell Inspiron 7000 Gaming series laptop.
Intel 7700HQ processor
and nVidia 1050 Ti Graphics Card (using proprietary nvidia driver 580).

Logged in to:
KDE plasma 6.6.5
wayland

How I tested 7.0.0-27-generic is working:
I selected that version in GRUB from advanced selection.

(Need to check that the brightness controls and suspend-resume is fixed
because using old kernel OR nvvidia driver not loaded.)

[Bug 2161309] Re: Backlight regression

2026-07-23 Thread Krystian Kaniewski
Thanks Neal for testing all these mainline kernels for me, it was really
helpful. It looks like we have got it narrowed down to the exact commit
I have been talking about.

I will try to get the fix to Ubuntu kernel now. Thanks once again!

[Bug 2161309] Re: Backlight regression

2026-07-22 Thread Krystian Kaniewski
Thanks Neal!

It looks like 7.1.3 actually already had the fix included then. I'm now
trying to make sure whether f30fddb4402313aa5301a74d721638d343395269 is
a real fix here and also trace back first revision mainline kernel
version it was applied to, but it can be a little bit difficult
sometimes.

Would you mind testing two more mainline kernels?

7.1-r5: https://kernel.ubuntu.com/mainline/v7.1-rc5/ - expected to fail
7.1-r7: https://kernel.ubuntu.com/mainline/v7.1-rc7/ - expected to pass

Hi, interestingly 7.1.3 doesn't have the regression in, both GNOME
brightness control and keyboard buttons work as expected.

uname -r is 7.1.3-070103-generic

Great news! Can you also possibly test 7.1.3 mainline kernel if your
time allows? I'd expect you to hit the brightness regression once again
running on 7.1.3 mainline.

[Bug 2161309] Re: Backlight regression

2026-07-21 Thread Krystian Kaniewski
Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and for providing the
diagnostic information. I appreciate your help.

A newer kernel includes a change that may restore brightness control on
this laptop. Please start with Mainline 7.1.4. If you are already
comfortable building Ubuntu kernels, there is also an advanced option
for Ubuntu kernel 7.0.0-28.

Start with Ubuntu Mainline kernel 7.1.4

1. I suggest testing Ubuntu Mainline kernel 7.1.4. It includes a change that
may restore working brightness controls on this laptop.
2. This test will show whether that change fixes the brightness problem seen
with the current Ubuntu kernel.
3. The official Ubuntu Mainline build for the reported amd64 architecture is
available here:

https://kernel.ubuntu.com/mainline/v7.1.4/amd64/

General Ubuntu instructions for installing, booting, checking, and
removing Mainline kernels are available here:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds

This is an unsupported test kernel, not a normal Ubuntu update. Its image is
unsigned and may not start with Secure Boot enabled. If it does not start,
please report that result rather than changing your Secure Boot settings solely
for this test.
4. After booting the test kernel, check the full brightness range with both
keyboard hotkeys and desktop controls. Repeat after suspend and resume, and
confirm that the screen itself becomes brighter or darker.
5. After booting, please run this command and include its output:

uname -r

6. Please report whether brightness control worked before and after
suspend, along with any installation or startup error.

Advanced option: build Ubuntu kernel 7.0.0-28 with fix
f30fddb4402313aa5301a74d721638d343395269

This is a lower-priority option for someone who is already comfortable building
Ubuntu kernels. It is not required for the Mainline comparison above.
The test would apply Revert drm/i915/backlight: Remove try_vesa_interface
(f30fddb4402313aa5301a74d721638d343395269) to the Ubuntu 7.0.0-28 kernel source.
This change may make the brightness keys and desktop brightness control affect
the screen again.

Source for the fix:

https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/commit/?id=f30fddb4402313aa5301a74d721638d343395269

Official Ubuntu instructions for obtaining the source, applying a patch,
building packages, installing the kernel, and checking the result:

https://ubuntu.com/kernel/docs/latest/how-to/develop-customise/build-
kernel/

If you choose this advanced test, please check the full brightness range
before and after suspend. After booting the test kernel, run this
command and include its output:

uname -r

Please report whether the screen itself becomes brighter or darker,
along with any installation or startup error.
