[Bug 243446] Re: Upgrade tool crashed

@Parag: Hello! Please open a terminal window and try the following to work
around the problem:
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install update-manager-core
$ sudo do-release-upgrade --mode=desktop

This should give you a text only upgrade, but at least you will be on
feisty then.

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 107188 ***

Hello Michael,
Thanks for the quick reply and suggestion. Actually, reading bug report on
launchpad, I came across the work-around of doing text mode upgrade.
Somebody suggested this:
Edit DistUpgrade.cfg so that it only tries to do the upgrade in text mode
since python can't load the libs for GTK, and QT has the memory issue.
So, I followed that and although that also resulted in an error at the end
but it seems I could upgrade to gusty. /etc/lsb-release shows gusty as I
would have liked. Not sure if the installation is fine in other ways. Are
there more robust checks to ensure integrity of upgrade / installation??

By the way, I had a crash while upgrading dictionaries as part of the
version upgrade. I am attaching file:
/var/crash/dictionaries-common.0.crash
Should I file a separate bug on this?

Thanks and I really appreciate your help, Michael.

[Bug 243446] Re: Upgrade tool crashed

2008-06-28 Thread Ralph Janke
Thanks for reporting this problem and helping to make Ubuntu better.

It is not 100% clear to me if update-manager crashed or not, if so
please include the .crash file or follow the following instructions:

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. However, your crash report is either missing or challenging to deal
with as a .crash file. Please follow these instructions to have apport report
a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

 If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable apport
in /etc/default/apport and restart.

 If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus
and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report
you wish to submit.
 If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using
/usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a
terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report.

If you do this and therefore create a new bug report, please make a
comment here to this extent, that this bug can be linked to the new one.

Furthermore, please attach the files in /var/log/dist-upgrade to this bug
report (or the new report if you also follow the previous instructions).

Thanks a lot.

Re: [Bug 243446] Re: Upgrade tool crashed

2008-06-28 Thread Parag Joshi
Hello,
I have been running ubuntu (I think edgy) 6.04 and I tried to do dist
upgrade from Adept Manager. I did see it crash in the middle. But,
there are no files in /var/crash.
After that I tried to do dist-upgrade twice and both times, it crashed
in the middle - but with a slightly different error. Now, I get out of
memory error when it crashes. So, I am not able to upgrade and I am
stuck at 6.04 (or 6.10). If you could help I will highly appreciate
it!

I have attached both files in /var/log.

Let me know if you need anything else.

Thanks
