I Just tried installing the ATI 8.10 drivers again. This time it worked. Wierd. Athough ATI does not claim to support the 46xx cards on their driver page, I remember seeing a webpage claiming that support was added in 8.9. Hardy's xserver-xorg-video-ati is 6.8.0-1. Presumably Intrepid will have 8.9 or later and this problem will fix itself.
