I have the same bug, i'm printing using samba via hp 5440 connected to my main pc, which is running windows xp. On my laptop, i run Linux Mint Felicia (6) that is Ubuntu 8.10. Until LM Elyssa (ubuntu 8.04) i was printing ok. Now, i have this problem. Trying to Install hplip 2.8.12, i get an error on make stage (error code 2...), so i can't install the update. Aaron, was there any fix done on HPLIP regarding the device class of the HP DeskJet 5440? I also have a HP 5440 Printer, Laptop is an Asus Z9200va (A6va). Same Problem here. No Problem with Ubuntu 8.04 or 7.*, but in 8.10, only pages with random characters are printed.
