Have been suffering form the same problem myself for about a year. I am
on 8.10 (previous installation was an upgrade from 8.04, now have a
fresh install with the same result). Connection is at full speed when
booted into Windows. It only seems to take minutes for me to go from
10+Mbps to 1Mbps,
I forgot to mention that this is on a complete unsecured network, no WPA
or WEP

It does not happen with my wired (on motherboard) ethernet. It is
specific to the WMP54G.
