[Bug 334063] Re: enable composting in metacity by default

2009-02-26 Thread Rick Spencer
Isn't the bug just the fact that it looks bad without compositing? Isn't
the way to fix this just to make it look nicer in the non-compositing
case? Turning on compositing seems like over kill. What am I missing?

compiz needs composite *and* 3D; I assume metacity+compositing only
needs compositing? would it be sufficient to look for

  [3.078905] (II) Composite (RENDER acceleration)

in Xorg.0.log? Is there a better way to detect compositing availability?

I have looked at metacity compositing at the sprint, and it doesn't do a
lot; basically, transparency and drop shadows. However, that might be
enough for notify-osd, of course.

My concerns here:

 * The _real_ problem is that notify-osd does not look good enough on
metacity. This needs to be fixed eiter way, since there will always be
drivers which does not support compositing (vesa, nv, all the old ones
like cirrus, etc.)

 * Introducing metacity+composite at this point of the release cycle
seems dangerous to me, since it will come with its own set of bugs,
uncover compositing bugs in drivers, and thus lead to hardware support
regressions.

Thus this is an interesting option to explore for future releases, but
I'd give my nack for Jaunty for this.
