I had a similar problem and I resolved it by installing the VLC player.

I just followed the upgrade from intrepid to jaunty. After a lot of
following bug reports of dvd doesn't work finally got it working in
intrepid. After upgrading to jaunty I no longer am able to play dvd again.
I have followed directions to /usr/share/doc/dvdread4 and run the script.
I've installed ffmpeg again after having it ripped in the upgrade. There
is also no way in the System menu to Shut down the computer or log off
or restart. I guess I'm just supposed to use terminal?

2009-05-24 Thread Dougie Richardson
I've just followed the help procedure on a new install (Dell 1545,
Jaunty) and the procedure works.

Is there an error message?

This is not the same problem. My DVD's do not play AFTER installing required
software and running the shell script found in /usr/share/doc/dvdread4.
