The Reason for this on Maverick is the package unclutter. I never
noticed this tool in Lucid, so I guess it's new. I didn't find a way to
disable it, so I pruged it. Maybe the default behavior should be
changed.

Reopening for Maverick. I have the exactly same behavior as described in
#6. Mousepointer disappears after exactly two seconds after moving. When
moving again it reappears.

Same problem. Intel 945.
A few details: it happens when cursor is over a regular area like a
browser window or a gnome panel, but doesn't happen when it is over a
drop-down menu, be it gnome main menu or an application-specific one.
When over a menu item, it doesn't disappear, but the pop-up

/etc/X11/xorg.conf attached. The only changes made since upgrading to
9.04 were attempts to get a working video driver without this issue -
hence fglrx and ati are on commented out lines.
I may have made other changes before I upgraded, but this issue was not
present before upgrade.
