I'm going to close this bug for now since there wasn't any response to
the last inquiry. If you are still experiencing issues, please test
with the Hardy Heron Alpha release which is currently under development.

This was rejected because the original path to get the card into the
problematic state was removed in 2.6.20. However, there are other ways
to get into this state (card overheating, machine suspending) so the
driver still needs to be fixed in 2.6.20. (Note that even rebooting does
not help to
I can't test this at the moment: The unload/reload trick didn't work. My
Knoppix CD, that has previously been successful in waking the device up
had gotten damaged from sitting in the drive, so that would not boot.
The strange thing is that when I booted with the 2.6.20-lowlatency

I want to add a question. I think that Ben told me in another bug that
the method of power/state file is no more available (deprecated). So why
did this bug go to high?

Right, since you cannot set this to 2 anymore, this bug is moot on
2.6.20.

Bringing the interface down should switch off the radio.

Mmm ok, so
ifconfig eth1 down
will deactivate the radio... and how can I see that it is really deactivated?
I've noticed also that when I uncheck enable wireless in
network-manager this will deactivate eth1. if this is really true
they've made a good job!
the following step will be a new hotkey

in the current 2.6.19 and 2.6.20-1 it is not possible to switch off
the wlan card using this method. so I cannot test it. It might be a
removed feature! I hope that acpi-support guys will move to the new
rf_kill method to switch off the card

I still has the bug. I noticed that if I do iwpriv wlan0 set_power 5
the wireless card works much more time without hang.

The error codes are the same.
My system is always in passive mode (I can't change this) and I think
it puts the IPW card in powersave mode automatically. After that, the
card stops working and trying to reload the module that error messages
appear in dmesg.

ipw2200 module can't be reloaded if its status was set to 2
I've noticed a few things:
- At home, the wireless card fails each time I transfer a big file (more
than 300 MB through SSH) from other computer. I've got a Zyxel Prestige
650HW router with WEP enabled and signal quality is about 50/100
(obtained with iwconfig).
- At my university I can transfer
I still have this problem, after firmware/ucode error I watched power
state and it was 0. I can't propperly reload the module, I have to
reboot. I'ts very annoying. ¿Anyone happends this too?

the bug occurs if ipw2200 module is unloaded when the file
/sys/class/net/ethN/device/power/state contains the state 2 (I think
it is a sort of suspend). This state is changed when I hit my laptop
wireless hotkey. when I try to do modprobe ipw2200 the module won't
load because of this error -5.
It's a bug that ipw2200 doesn't power up the card before trying to load.
I'll look into it.

wait wait wait!
If the user switched it off he doesn't want it to be switched on at
the module reload.
USE CASE: the user switches the card off and puts the pc into suspend
mode, because he is going to an area in which wireless can't be used
(such as an hospital). When he is in the ospital he
That's an entirely separate problem, and one we don't even pretend to

When I'm downloading a big file (like an ISO) or I'm connected a lot of
