[Bug 43293] Re: Fn+F4 doesn't switch to ext monitor Compaq 4020us (all other Fn keys fine)
Same values as Valentin on 2009-02-04 on a Compaq 8510w. Note that the way the display switching should work is a bit more complex. Ideally, the desktop environment should be able to get an event, use RANDR to probe the connected display and make a decision. There is also an ACPI Display switch infrastructure which keeps it within the driver, but outside of the desktop environment. This is a driver - ACPI issue only. At most, one of these methods should be active at any given time, realistically all RANDR capable drivers should be able to support the DesktopEnvironment+RANDR method, and _most_ laptops should have most of the ACPI infrastructure in place to handle ACPI+Driver display switching. BIOS based display switching (ie: from the console) is too rudimentary to be useful for X windows. (Feel free to contact me (matthew.tipp...@amd.com) for more discussion). -- Fn+F4 doesn't switch to ext monitor Compaq 4020us (all other Fn keys fine) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/43293 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 43293] Re: Fn+F4 doesn't switch to ext monitor Compaq 4020us (all other Fn keys fine)
Running Ubuntu 8.10 with latest updates installed. Running point #2 shows that an event is not seen on Fn+F4. Tried running it also form console, but it complained about being unable to open the display. I've realised that trying to switch to external monitor only works from the console (CTRL+ALT+F1). Any idea why it takes 2 keypresses to activate the console? The first attempt brings me back into X. Output of #4 is attached below. At #7 I tried every input, 0-8 worked. Only input 1 sensed anything while pressing Fn+F4, but it also reacted to other keypresses. I would have attached the full output of the #7 command, but for some reason every time I try to redirect it to a file, the file stays empty. I'll try to reproduce it here: EV_NSC code=4 value=62 EV_SYN code=0 value=0 This is what always appears for Fn+F4. As you can see in the outout of #4, there's no input.keys for input 1 and input.x11_driver is set to evdev, but X doesn't see it so this would mean filing a bug against hal. For the remaining part of #7, issuing cat /usr/include/linux/input.h | grep EV_NSC finds nothing, while issuing cat /usr/include/linux/input.h | grep EV_SYN finds #define EV_SYN 0x00. For #9, the value needed is up above. the output of lshal | grep system.hardware is attached below. #10, no other input devices reacts to Fn+F2. #11-13 not needed. Please instruct me further on how and what to test. ** Attachment added: hal-find-by-capability.log http://launchpadlibrarian.net/21993703/hal-find-by-capability.log -- Fn+F4 doesn't switch to ext monitor Compaq 4020us (all other Fn keys fine) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/43293 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Hello, acpi-support is not (or should not be) involved with handling of this keypress in current versions of Ubuntu. Can you confirm whether this key works now with Ubuntu 8.10 or later? If not, please follow https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Hotkeys/Troubleshooting and report here your results. ** Changed in: hal-info (Ubuntu) Sourcepackagename: acpi-support = hal-info Status: New = Incomplete -- Fn+F4 doesn't switch to ext monitor Compaq 4020us (all other Fn keys fine) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/43293 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 43293] Re: Fn+F4 doesn't switch to ext monitor Compaq 4020us (all other Fn keys fine)
I'm using a fresh install of Intrepid x86 with Intel 915 graphics on a HP Compaq 6220. Pressing Fn+F4 should switch to external monitor, either in clone mode or extended mode. It doesn't happen like that as the external monitor doesn't detect a signal source. The same external monitor works fine with a Dell Latitude D630 with nVidia graphics and proprietary drivers.

I have the same problem on laptop MAXDATA ECO 4510 IW (Intel 945GM card, intel driver in xorg): all Fn-Fx keys work ok, only Fn-F4 does not. I tried to install i810switch, but it makes more harm than good (it spoils Fn-F8 combination, which normally decreases brightness on this laptop model, and it still does not work). So I'm not able to connect external monitor. -- Fn+F4 doesn't switch to ext monitor Compaq 4020us (all other Fn keys fine) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/43293 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

install i810switch and launch i810rotate command in a terminal. the i810switch command echo the state : internal, internal+external, external, etc...
